About our palliative care unit
On our palliative care ward, we look after adult patients who are suffering from a serious and incurable illness. The main reasons for admission to our unit are physical and emotional complaints caused by the progression of the illness or an overwhelming care situation. The aim of a stay on our palliative care ward is to alleviate stressful symptoms and problems as well as possible so that well-being and quality of life can be maintained or even improved. The best way to support our patients is through the cooperation of various professions in an interdisciplinary team of specialized physicians, nurses, psychologists, social workers, physiotherapists, pastoral care workers, volunteers and art therapists in order to meet as many of the needs of our patients and their relatives as possible.
The palliative care ward is an acute ward in the hospital. By stabilizing physical or psychosocial problems, the aim is to enable further care outside the hospital, at home or in an inpatient care facility or hospice, if possible. The social services staff help patients and their relatives with the question "What can I do after my stay in hospital?" and organize the necessary care after discharge. If discharge is no longer possible, we also accompany patients - with the best possible medical, nursing and psychosocial support - during the last days and hours of their lives.
The palliative care ward and the palliative medical consultation service (PMK) therefore work closely with the Hanover hospices and outpatient palliative care services (Hanover palliative care support point).
The palliative care unit consists of 7 single rooms with access to a balcony with seating. Our rooms offer sufficient space so that relatives can be offered the opportunity to stay overnight in the patient's room. A small kitchen in the living/dining room is also available to our patients and their relatives on the palliative care ward.
