Ward - taking a big step forward with intensive treatment
In the inpatient setting, we offer 20 treatment places and provide intensive individual and group therapy. The inpatient community is a curative factor. The distance from your familiar home environment gives you the opportunity to learn to understand yourself and your situation better and to actively look for solutions together. You can then check the effectiveness and suitability of these solutions at regular intervals in your own home.
Our inpatient and integrated day-care treatment program consists of a scientifically based psychosomatic complex treatment. The integrated treatment concept includes elements of behavioral therapy as well as depth psychology, systemic and trauma therapy.
A special feature is the possibility of providing purely inpatient or integrated inpatient/day clinic treatment, depending on the indication. This makes it possible to switch from the ward to the day clinic (or vice versa) without having to change therapists.
Core elements of inpatient and day clinic therapy:
- Individual psychotherapy
- Group psychotherapy
- Trauma-specific therapy if required
- Socio-educational counseling
- Discussions with relatives
- Disorder-specific sports activities

Head:
Prof'in Dr. rer. nat. Tanja Zimmermann, Dipl.-Psych.
Professor of Psychosomatics and Psychotherapy with a focus on transplant medicine and oncology
The diagnosis of cancer and the necessary medical treatment represent a drastic life event for the person affected and their social environment. In addition to the physical side effects of the illness or treatment, it can also lead to emotional stress, such as anxiety and depression. These stresses can also affect relatives and put a strain on relationships.
Psycho-oncological care at the MHH aims to support those affected and their close relatives in coming to terms with their illness and treatment. Our aim is to optimize the medical, psychological and psychosocial treatment of patients. To this end, the psycho-oncology staff work closely with the medical team. In confidential psycho-oncological discussions, patients' psychological and psychosocial problems can be discussed and possible solutions worked out. At the patient's request, relatives can also be involved in the treatment. The contacts can take place either at the patient's bedside or on our premises. The psycho-oncology staff come on request. They are partly integrated into the ward operations, and outpatient treatment is also possible.
Further summarized information can be found in our flyer.
Our services include crisis intervention, individual, couples and family counseling as well as short-term psychotherapy in individual or group settings:
Current group offer for oncology patients
Fears about the future are often a major stress factor for people with cancer, even after treatment has been completed. Worries about the progression or recurrence of the disease can restrict quality of life. These problems can be discussed and solutions sought in the confidential setting of a group of affected people. In addition to overcoming anxiety, the group also focuses on activating personal sources of strength and coping with stress.
Our group offer usually takes place on Mondays from 15:30-17:00. These are fixed groups with 8 sessions each, which take place every two weeks. A pre-registration for a personal initial consultation (approx. 50 min.) is required before the group therapy begins. To do this, please contact us at the following e-mail address: psychoonkologie@mh-hannover.de. You will then receive an initial appointment and all other necessary information.

Outpatient psycho-oncological care in Lower Saxony
Cancer patients are entitled to comprehensive and high-quality psychosocial care in all phases of their illness and therapy (National Cancer Plan: Field of action 2, Goal 9, www.bmg.bund.de). However, cancer patients often lack information on access to adequate outpatient psycho-oncological care. Finding a therapist can be difficult.
On the website www.psychoonkologie-niedersachsen.de we would like to inform you about the possibilities of outpatient psycho-oncological care in the Hanover region.
Here you will find the contact details of therapists in private practice who treat oncology patients in their outpatient practice.
Last but not least, a podcast ("Onko für die Lauscher") from the Comprehensive Cancer Center Lower Saxony (Claudia von Schilling Center) of the MHH.
Patients and their relatives can take advantage of outpatient psycho-oncological support at the Klaus Bahlsen Center for Integrative Oncology.
