Coagulation outpatient clinic

This outpatient clinic is used for the diagnosis and treatment of coagulation disorders, i.e. increased bleeding or thrombosis tendencies in children and adolescents. This includes inherited disorders such as haemophilia, acquired disorders of blood coagulation and also care following thromboses or strokes.

A competent team ensures that you are well informed, that a coagulation disorder is diagnosed or ruled out and that, if necessary, optimum treatment and prevention is initiated and carried out.

Range of services

Diagnosis and treatment of congenital and acquired blood coagulation disorders such as

  • Hemophilia A or B
  • Von Willebrand syndrome (congenital and acquired)
  • Congenital or acquired deficiency of individual coagulation factors
  • Coagulation diagnostics before planned operations in the case of suspected coagulation disorders (see preoperative diagnostics below) and perioperative management of coagulation disorders (substitution treatment)
  • Platelet dysfunction (e.g. Bernard-Soulier syndrome, Glanzmann thrombasthenia, etc.)
  • Increased tendency to thrombosis (thrombophilia)
Therapy management and diagnostics for previous thromboses (including sonographic follow-up)

Preoperative diagnostics

One focus of our coagulation outpatient clinic is the preoperative diagnosis of blood coagulation disorders. Depending on the planned operation, we provide patients with interdisciplinary care together with surgical colleagues (ENT, dental clinic, pediatric surgery, urology, ophthalmology, etc.), draw up a treatment plan and monitor the post-operative course.

Diagnosis, care and treatment of severe coagulation disorders

If our young patients are diagnosed with a severe coagulation disorder, we provide further care, initiate therapy if necessary (prophylaxis, treatment as required) and manage the therapy
As we are a large university hospital, there are generally short distances to other specialist groups with the possibility of interdisciplinary joint care of a patient.

Thrombophilia

We have the largest treatment facility in Lower Saxony for children and adolescents with thromboses, embolisms and strokes. In addition to the treatment of acute thromboses, prophylaxis is an important treatment goal. This is intended to prevent the occurrence of new thrombotic events.

Family examinations

Coagulation disorders are often hereditary. We examine the affected family members and advise the patients with regard to their illness and the parents of the child with regard to further family planning.

Acquired coagulation disorders

As we are a large university hospital, we provide multidisciplinary care together with our colleagues in cardiology, pulmonology, nephrology, etc. children with coagulation disorders acquired due to other underlying diseases.

Studies

We take part in studies in order to further improve the therapy for our patients and to be able to offer the best possible therapy for each patient.

Training courses, events

The parents of patients, or older children and adolescents with severe blood coagulation disorders, usually inject the coagulation factor at home on their own.
