Dear visitors,
Welcome to the website of the Institute for Continuing Education in Psychotherapy at Hannover Medical School. We are delighted that you are interested in further training to become a specialist psychotherapist for adults in behavioral therapy.
On the following pages you will find the most important information about the content and structure of our training program, the requirements and application procedures.
All information at a glance
Dear colleagues,
We are pleased to invite you again this year to a symposium in our "MHH trifft t Oberberg" series on Wednesday, November 5, 2025 from 16:00 to 20:00 at Hannover Medical School (MHH). PD Dr. med. Maximilian Deest and Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Gregor R. Szycik will moderate the event around two exciting lectures. Prof. Dr. med. Stefan Röpke will talk about "Autism spectrum disorder in adulthood" and Dr. med. Jelte Frieder Wieting will address the "Double challenge: ADHD and comorbid addictive disorders - guideline-based diagnosis and therapy". The symposium is certified by the Medical Association of Lower Saxony with 4 CME points (category A). Participation is free of charge.
You can find the invitation HERE.
The further training content of the Institute for Psychotherapy at Hannover Medical School is based on the further training regulations for psychotherapists of the Lower Saxony Chamber of Psychotherapists(WBO PT PKN).
The further training enables the acquisition of in-depth knowledge and skills in the behavioral therapy treatment of adults. The necessary further training content is offered at the MHH from a single source, so that you can complete both the inpatient and outpatient parts of the further training as well as the associated theory, supervision and self-awareness at our Institute.
In addition to the area further training for adults in behavioral therapy, there is also the option of area further training in depth psychology-based psychotherapy if you are interested and available.
Due to our university affiliation, we place particular emphasis on the teaching and application of modern, scientifically based therapy methods. The close networking with various research groups in our Clinical Department also offers the opportunity to become involved in research, for example as part of a doctoral thesis.
Theory
The theoretical content is usually taught in block seminars comprising 16 course units. These block seminars take place approximately every two months so that the required theory hours can be easily achieved after five years. In addition to the block seminars, it is possible to take part in further medical training courses and acquire individual theoretical content via the in-house e-learning platform ILIAS.
Synergies with the Training Institute for Behavioral Therapy and Behavioral Medicine (AVVM) are also used. Accordingly, seminars can be attended by our psychological psychotherapists in training.
Self-awareness
Self-experience is also organized for you by the WfP-MHH. It is carried out by self-awareness trainers recognized by the Lower Saxony Chamber of Psychotherapists in block courses.
Supervision
High-quality supervision is provided throughout both the inpatient training content and the outpatient psychotherapeutic treatments. A team of experienced psychological psychotherapists will supervise you and your treatments throughout the entire training period, so that expert support is available at all times.
Inpatient and outpatient training components
As part of your further training at the WfP-MHH, you will complete the inpatient and outpatient training components in parallel. This means that, at the start of your training, you will work 50% of the time on one of our inpatient or day-care psychiatric wards and 50% of the time independently carrying out psychotherapeutic treatments in the outpatient training clinic. The parallelism of inpatient and outpatient structures offers you a varied working environment and the opportunity to use therapeutic interventions in a setting-specific manner.
If you are in need of psychotherapeutic treatment, you are very welcome to contact our psychotherapeutic outpatient clinics. Further information and contact details for registration can be found here.
