Sleep physiology - the necessity of mental absence

Public lecture by Prof. Dr. Evgeni Ponimaskin and Dr. Alexander Wirth

"You can sleep when you're old" - but if you don't sleep, you won't grow old in the first place. The latest findings from sleep research are gradually unraveling the essential role of sleep and its role in the functioning of the entire organism - even during the day. What exactly is sleep and what happens inside us without us realizing it?

Although we spend about a third of our lives in this state, we are only slowly beginning to understand the role of sleep and, above all, restful sleep, and not just for our health. New research findings are bringing more and more fascinating new insights to light and show us the multitude of processes that take place in this state. We have long known that sleep as such is essential for us and many other living beings. Sleep and dreams fascinated the ancient Greeks in the form of Hypnos and Morpheus, and even today more and more people are interested in sleep - not least because it causes problems for many people.

Dream and deep sleep, learning and remembering, processing emotions and cleaning up the body and ridding it of unnecessary waste - come with us on a journey to hidden physiological processes.
