Continuing education committee

Further medical training covers the period from the completion of medical studies to the attainment of the specialist qualification. During this time, the focus is on imparting theoretical knowledge and the practical application of medical knowledge and skills.

The Clinical Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine has restructured the training period in order to guarantee a comparable, excellent level of both professional and social skills, which are indispensable for the medical profession, with the formal achievement of the specialist qualification. In 2019, we developed a logbook for this purpose, which, in addition to the formal requirements, also reflects the current status of further training and skills for the assistant physician.

Committed employees of the department meet in the further training commission with the aim of evaluating the current further training structure, implementing optimization measures and developing further training offers.

Induction of new employees

During the first eight weeks, every trainee is continuously supervised by a specialist in the anesthesia departments of trauma surgery, plastic surgery and gynecology in order to learn how to independently administer general anesthesia to a largely healthy patient.

The principles of balanced anesthesia and intravenous anesthesia are taught, with a further focus on the premedication discussion with anesthesia information, dealing with postoperative nausea and vomiting and adequate postoperative pain therapy.

Short rotations to cardiology, diagnostic radiology and the department of transfusion medicine are also planned.

In addition to the interpretation of preliminary findings and differentiated therapy with blood products, the focus is on personal contact between the staff in the departments.

In detail, our new employees can expect

  • Introduction (2 days, central MHH event)
  • Tutorial with experienced specialists (4-6 weeks, depending on previous experience)
  • Propaedeutic course
  • X-ray diagnostics (5 days in the morning, Institute of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology)
  • Medical history taking and information (10 days in the afternoon, anesthesia outpatient clinic)
  • Transfusion medicine (2 days all day, Institute for Transfusion Medicine)
  • MPG instruction (3 days)

Fellowship Pediatric Anesthesia

The Clinical Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine at the MHH offers a pediatric anesthesiology fellowship for specialists. The curriculum was developed by the pediatric anesthesiology fellowship working group. The training content can be found in this preamble.

The following Clinical Departments are currently training according to this curriculum: Hannover Medical School, Cnopf'sche Kinderklinik Nürnberg, Kinderklinik auf der Bult, Hannover, Uni Tübingen, Klinikum Bremen, Universitätsklinik Köln, Universitätsklinik Göttingen, Universitätsklinik Bonn, Universitätsklinik Ulm, Olgaspital Stuttgart. The St. Augustin, HH Altona and HH Wilhelmstift children's hospitals will also be offering this program in the future.

Rotation planning in specialist training

In the anaesthesia outpatient department, the trainee learns to assess the anaesthetic risk of a patient for a procedure using anamnesis and examination techniques and taking into account previous findings and, if necessary, to initiate further necessary preparations.

In the subsequent rotations in the fields of trauma surgery, plastic, hand and reconstructive surgery, urology and gynecology, the techniques of general anesthesia are to be consolidated and further developed. There is also the opportunity to learn the basics of regional and spinal anesthesia procedures.

In the second year of training, the focus is on the safe control of the difficult airway. In the areas of ear, nose and throat medicine and oral and maxillofacial surgery, the trainee learns how to handle the difficult airway, the necessary planning of the anaesthetic procedure and the appropriate use of alternative methods to secure the airway.

The focus of the third year is on the handling of intracranial and intra-abdominal interventions in neurosurgery and abdominal surgery. Advanced monitoring, differentiated volume and transfusion management and the adaptation of measures to existing pathophysiologies are key areas.

The fourth year is followed by a one-year stay in our interdisciplinary intensive care unit. During this rotation, the focus is on the general inpatient care of seriously ill patients as well as the targeted diagnosis and treatment of complex intensive care conditions.

In the final year of training, the assistant is given the opportunity to gain an insight into special and sensitive areas such as pediatric, cardiac, thoracic and vascular surgery. In addition, a further rotation in gynecology is planned explicitly for the care of obstetric interventions.

Continuing education seminars

Every month, the further training working group organizes a seminar tailored to the further training assistants, which offers a cross-section of both theoretical topics (e.g. ECG, chest X-ray) and practical exercises on the phantom (airway management, ultrasound-guided procedures, hygiene).

During their specialist training, assistant physicians take part in full-day seminars. These are organized according to the years of further training (WB year) and are tailored to the assumption of clinical tasks:

  • WB year 1 = HAINS classic + ACLS
  • WB year 2 = HAINS Airway + PALS
  • WB year 3 = ALCS EP
  • WB year 4 = HAINS ICU
  • WB year 5 = HAINS Ped

Details of our courses can be found on the pages of the Simulation Center.
