Pediatric anesthesia in the children's hospital
The pediatric anesthesia team can use its extensive experience, special knowledge and child-friendly equipment to care for a wide range of patients, from the smallest premature babies to adults, from hernia operations to complex heart surgery, with the greatest possible safety and comfort. We are familiar with the fears of children and the worries of parents, work closely with pediatricians and surgeons and try to spare our young patients fear and pain before, during and after the operation.
The various pediatric surgical and pediatric cardiac surgical operations are usually performed in the pediatric clinic under general anesthesia, often combined with regional anesthesia. Awake regional anesthesia is also used for minor operations on premature and newborn babies and small infants. Various methods of analgosedation are offered for bone marrow and lumbar punctures, as well as for other painful procedures. We also take care of children who require central venous access or have difficult venous conditions or pain problems.
Particular emphasis is placed on post-operative pain therapy. In most cases, a local or regional pain block is used intraoperatively to ensure that the children wake up as pain-free as possible. Parents are welcome in the recovery room.
Anesthesia in children
Sobriety periods
It is very important to us that fasting times are short and that all children are affected as little as possible. You will be given further information on this during your consultation, which you can also find in our diagram.
Acute illness
If your child becomes acutely ill before the planned operation (purulent cold, productive cough, fever over 38.5°C), it is advisable to postpone the operation date.
Please contact us on weekdays between 07:30-16:00 on 0176-1532-2132.
Fellowship Pediatric Anesthesia
The Clinical Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine at the MHH offers a pediatric anesthesiology fellowship for specialists. The curriculum was developed by the pediatric anesthesiology fellowship working group. The training content can be found in this preamble.
The following Clinical Departments are currently training according to this curriculum: Hannover Medical School, Cnopf'sche Kinderklinik Nürnberg, Kinderklinik auf der Bult, Hannover, Uni Tübingen, Klinikum Bremen, Universitätsklinik Köln, Universitätsklinik Göttingen, Universitätsklinik Bonn, Universitätsklinik Ulm, Olgaspital Stuttgart. The St. Augustin, HH Altona and HH Wilhelmstift children's hospitals will also be offering this program in the future.
Research in pediatric anesthesia
The physiology, homeostasis and also the needs of children under anesthesia differ from those of adults. The underlying diseases that lead to operations and treatments or the indication for anesthesia are also different in pediatrics.
We want to continuously improve pediatric anesthesia by increasing the evidence for our actions through research.
