Before you undergo a surgical procedure, a consultation with an anaesthetist is necessary, during which we will familiarize ourselves with your medical history and inform you about the anaesthetic. We would like to explain the process to you in more detail here. A rotating team of physicians from the Clinical Department of Anesthesiology and the Intensive Care Unit will look after you during the premedication consultation.

Compared to a visit by the anaesthetist to your patient's room, a consultation during the premedication consultation has the advantage of having as few disturbing influences as possible and being able to better protect your privacy. Unfortunately, due to the size of the Clinical Department, it is not always possible for you to speak to the anesthetist who will subsequently administer your anesthesia before the procedure. However, it is always guaranteed that the information you give us during your consultation will be passed on in full.

You will first be asked to complete an anesthesia questionnaire. This serves the anaesthetist as a basis for taking your medical history and is intended to familiarize you with the subject of anaesthesia. If you have any further questions about the type of anesthesia, these will of course be answered during the consultation. Your documents will be used to evaluate the best anesthesia procedure for you depending on the operation.

Further examinations (ECG, chest X-ray, lung function, blood tests, consultation with a cardiologist) may be necessary in order to minimize the risk of anaesthesia or surgery for you.
A physical examination is used, among other things, to evaluate heart murmurs or to "listen to the lungs".

Rules of conduct

In addition, you will be given some rules of conduct before the anesthesia to avoid preventable incidents, which we will be happy to explain to you during the consultation.

  • Do not eat anything for 6 hours before the anesthetic, including milk and drinks with solid ingredients
  • Do not drink anything 2 hours before the anesthetic (exception: some water in combination with medication)
  • Do not smoke on the day of anesthesia. Please remove your make-up (make-up, nail polish etc.) and leave all removable jewelry on the ward
  • Contact lenses may not be taken into the operating room or examination room, glasses only in the case of severe defective vision
  • If necessary, leave any dental prostheses, artificial hairpieces and other prostheses on the ward. Exceptions are only possible in consultation with the anesthesiologist
  • If you take medication in the morning, please discuss with your anesthetist which medication you can take in the morning before the anesthetic
