When cancer runs in the family: The G-BA's Innovation Fund is supporting the OnkoRiskNET project to improve care for families with a genetic tumor risk syndrome with around 2.5 million euros.

What is the background?

In Germany, almost 500,000 people are diagnosed with cancer every year. At least 5-10% of these tumor diseases have a hereditary cause and occur as part of a tumor risk syndrome. In Germany, however, there is a lack of nationwide access to human genetic patient care for the consultation and diagnosis of patients with a tumor risk syndrome, particularly in rural areas.

The Federal Joint Committee (G-BA) promotes new forms of care (OnkoRiskNET) and care research projects that go beyond the current standard care provided by the statutory health insurance funds through an innovation fund that has been set up. Once the funded projects have been completed, the G-BA makes a recommendation for their inclusion in standard care.

What are our goals?

The OnkoRiskNET project aims to create a cooperation network of registered oncologists and specialists in human genetics in the federal states of Lower Saxony and Saxony within the next four years.

Structured treatment pathways, support in determining indications and interpreting findings and telemedical genetic counseling are intended to ensure access to genetic counseling, diagnostics and risk-adapted prevention for genetic tumor risk syndromes in structurally weak regions.

"Hardly any other discipline is currently experiencing such a rapid increase in technology, knowledge and importance as is the case in human genetics. This makes it all the more important to develop care concepts such as OnkoRiskNET that keep pace with this development and ensure comprehensive human genetic care in the future."

Prof. Dr. med. Brigitte Schlegelberger, former Director of the Institute of Human Genetics at the MHH.
