About the Institute

Institute for Ethics, History and Philosophy of Medicine

The institute was created in 1988 due to the long-standing initiative of the first Rector of the MHH, Prof. Dr. Fritz Hartmann. The first head of the institute was Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Eckart (appointed to Heidelberg in 1992). Prof. Dr. Brigitte Lohff took over as head of the institute in July 1994. From October 2013 to July 2020, Dr. Gerald Neitzke served as acting director of the institute. Prof. Dr. Dr. Sabine Salloch took over as head of the institute in August 2020.

The focus on ethics was established from 1996 and further consolidated in December 2002 with the creation of a junior professorship for the foundations and didactics of medical ethics. The department is responsible for establishing a clinical ethics committee and managing it.

The institute library comprises approx. 15,000 volumes with a focus on the history of medicine, ethics, the history of philosophy, medicine in the "Third Reich", public health, literature on house fathers and house mothers from the 16th to 18th centuries. Since 1998, the institute has been responsible for the MHH archives.

At the beginning of 2021, the Institute was renamed the "Institute for Ethics, History and Philosophy of Medicine".
