Main areas of research
- Development, evaluation and implementation of diabetes education and treatment programs (preschool children, school children, adolescents, parents, adults with type 2 and type 1 diabetes; educational training for parents, education on early forms of type 1 diabetes, education program SPECTRUM on rtCGM); development and evaluation of education programs for less common and rare diseases (ModuS: CF, PKU, craniopharyngioma, anaphylaxis, chronic abdominal pain and others)
- Research on psychological aspects of chronic disease (quality of life, coping, acceptance, treatment adherence, psychosocial and economic long-term consequences, diabetes-specific psychological stress and disorders)
- Development and validation of psychological measurement instruments on the psychological and psychosocial consequences of chronic illness;
- Development of European standards for the care and education of children and adolescents with diabetes (Better control in pediatric and adolescent diabetes: working to create centers of reference (EU - SWEET-Project); and EU project Leonardo da Vinci: European Certified Diabetes Educator (ECDE);
- Responsible author of the international ISPAD guidelines (2014, 2018, 2022) on diabetes education and the DDG guidelines on psychosocial aspects of diabetes and psychological aspects in pediatric diabetology
- Development of counseling concepts for parents of children with congenital rare diseases, e.g. MPS, PKU, cystinosis, thyrosinemia or genetically increased risks, e.g. type 1 diabetes
- Training of diabetologists, diabetes consultants and diabetes psychologists on psychodiabetological topics and on Communications with particularly stressed patients and parents of affected children
