We mourn the loss of the former head of our Institute Prof. Dr. Friedrich Wilhelm Schwartz
Prof. Dr. Friedrich Wilhelm Schwartz passed away on 12.10.2024 at the age of 81.
He is closely associated with the introduction and establishment of public health in Germany, which he played a key role in shaping.
In 1989, he founded the first Master's degree program in Public Health at a medical university in Germany at the MHH, and in 2006 he initiated the first German patient university.
Prof. Dr. Schwartz was a long-standing member and chairman of the Council of Experts for Concerted Action in Health Care. The report on over-. Underuse and misuse, which was published under his leadership.
He has initiated and advised on numerous reforms in the German healthcare system. The beacons of his extensive work include the establishment of health reporting, the introduction of technology assessment, the development of empirical health services research, health economics and health systems research using routine data and the promotion of patient orientation. He was particularly interested in prevention, which he further developed with the prevention programs for children and pregnant women as well as early cancer detection.
His expertise was in demand worldwide and he was an advisor to the WHO and the EU, among others.
Prof. Dr. Schwartz was Director of the Institute of Epidemiology, Social Medicine and Public Health Research at Hannover Medical School from 1985 to 2009. From 1991 to 2013, he headed the Institute of Epidemiology, Social Medicine and Public Health Research (ISEG) in Witten and Hannover, which he founded and which carried out application-oriented research in prevention, rehabilitation and medical care. He was director of the Central Institute for Statutory Health Insurance Physicians from 1974 to 1985 and managing director of the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians from 1972 to 1984.
Prof. Dr. Schwartz has been awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. He was awarded the Salomon Neumann Medal of the German Society for Social Medicine and Prevention (DGSMP), the Peter Beckmann Medal of the German Society for Prevention and Rehabilitation of Cardiovascular Diseases (dgpr) and is an honorary member of the German Network for Health Services Research (DNVF).
In Prof. Dr. Wilhelm Schwartz, we have lost a great reformer, the initiator of modern (population) medicine as he saw himself, an inspiring mentor and a kind person with a wide range of interests.
