Welcome to the Institute of Functional and Applied Anatomy.
Dear Sir or Madam,
Welcome to the website of the Institute of Functional and Applied Anatomy at Hannover Medical School!
Anatomy is the study of the structure, function, and development of the human body. It is thus a comprehensive foundational discipline that plays an essential role in both research and teaching. Whether in the selection of our scientific research questions or in teaching anatomical content, it is always important to us to link structure, function, and clinical relevance.
In our research, while not everything revolves around lung health, much of it does. From normal and abnormal lung development, the influence of nutrition on lung function, or lung damage caused by mechanical ventilation, to the aging of the lungs, the institute’s staff investigate clinically relevant questions (research focus). Our work is embedded within the network of the German Center for Lung Research. Methodologically, the institute’s expertise lies in modern electron microscopy, including three-dimensional and correlative techniques as well as digital image analysis (Central Research Facility for Electron Microscopy).
Medical students and students in other programs at MHH learn functionally oriented and clinically relevant anatomy and cell biology from us, which goes far beyond the rote memorization often associated with the subject. We are convinced that teaching anatomy through the dissection course is an essential component of medical education (Dissection Course: Foundation of Medical Practice, Deutsches Ärzteblatt), which can be supplemented by digital offerings but can by no means be replaced by them. The institute also houses the body donation program required for macroscopic anatomy. Clinical anatomy courses are also held here, serving the continuing education of physicians. Several specialists in anatomy work at the institute, all of whom are fully authorized to provide training for the specialty of anatomy.
Have we piqued your interest? Or do you have questions for us? We look forward to hearing from you!
Warm regards,
Christian Mühlfeld
