This module teaches theoretical and practical knowledge of general infection theory and epidemiology. This includes an overview of the most common and relevant pathogens (bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites), their transmission routes, the clinical pictures they cause, diagnostic procedures for their detection and options for anti-infective therapy. In addition, you will be introduced to measures for the prevention of hospital-acquired (nosocomial) infections and how to deal with patients with multi-resistant pathogens. You can find the complete curriculum for the module here.
We are delighted to have been awarded the student body's teaching prize for our module for the 2021/2022 academic year(see certificate).
The module consists of a main lecture on microbiology (only online on-demand), virology and hospital hygiene as well as an accompanying internship, seminars and the discussion of clinical cases in small groups (POL). The corresponding lecture slides will be made available to medical students in ILIAS.
The lectures usually take place in lecture hall R, the microbiology and virology internship in course room L27 and the seminars and POL case discussions in various seminar rooms in the teaching wing of building I 6, Theoretical Institutes II, levels S and H. The practice rooms for the hospital hygiene internship are located in the MHH Skills Lab in building K10, level U0. However, room changes at short notice are always possible. Therefore, please ask the Office of Academic Affairs if necessary. Here you can find the map of the MHH campus.

The module concludes with an electronic multiple choice (MC) written exam. This consists of a total of 60 questions, including some illustrated questions and questions on infectiology cases. The content of the exam covers all courses in the module. Admission to and passing of the written exam are subject to the requirements of the study and examination regulations of Hannover Medical School.
The current dates of lectures, internships, seminars and examinations are stored in your individual FACT by the Office of Academic Affairs.
To support student teaching, we are always looking for tutors for the microbiology and hospital hygiene internships who have already successfully completed the module. In order to be able to fulfill all the formalities required for employment as a research assistant in a timely manner, we recommend contacting us as early as possible.
If you are interested in a tutor position for the microbiology internship, please contact Ms. Simone Konnerth. If you are interested in a tutor position to accompany the hospital hygiene internship, please contact Ms. Angela Legarth.
It is possible to complete a clinical traineeship or a PJ block in microbiology. This provides an in-depth insight into the following areas of work:
Infectiologic diagnostics:
- Preparation, elaboration and macroscopic assessment of culture from various materials (e.g. urine, stool, wound swabs, cerebrospinal fluid and punctates)
- Methods for direct and indirect pathogen detection (e.g. cultural, microscopic, serological, immunochromatographic and molecular biological)
- Susceptibility testing and evaluation
Clinical microbiology:
- Visits to risk areas for therapy advice
- Support for the antibiotic stewardship team
- Inspection of infection-relevant areas (hospital hygiene)
Travel medicine vaccination consultation:
- Advice for patients before long-distance travel
- Administration of vaccinations
- Coordination of malaria prophylaxis
Infectiology training:
- Staff training (Microbiology MHH)
- Infectiology case conference of the MHH (Center for Internal Medicine MHH)
- Grand Round of the MHH (Center for Internal Medicine MHH)
If you are interested in a clinical traineeship or a PJ block, please contact Prof. Dr. Dr. Franz-Christoph Bange.
