Autologous blood donation

Blood transfusions are unavoidable in many operations. The transfusion of foreign blood can be associated with intolerance reactions (e.g. allergic reactions), immunization (formation of antibodies) against certain characteristics of foreign blood cells, blood loss in the event of an incorrect transfusion and the transmission of infectious diseases such as hepatitis B/C or HIV (AIDS). These risks can be partially or completely avoided by autologous blood donation during planned operations.

Technique of autologous blood donation

After puncturing a vein in the arm, a total of 450 mL of blood flows into a bag system consisting of a storage bag for autologous plasma and a storage bag for the red blood cells. The latter bag also contains a nutrient solution so that the red blood cells can be stored for up to 6 weeks if cooled sufficiently (4°C). The autologous plasma can be stored at -40°C for up to 2 years. We may administer physiological saline solution or another volume substitute as part of the autologous blood donation. The puncture cannula is then removed and the puncture site is bandaged with a gauze compress.
