Cluster of Excellence REBIRTH
Success for regenerative medicine - "REBIRTH" prevails in the Excellence Initiative
Hanover, 13.10.2006: The German Research Foundation announces that the Cluster of Excellence "From Regenerative Biology to Reconstructive Therapy", abbreviated to "REBIRTH", has been approved for funding as part of the Excellence Initiative of the Federal and State Governments to promote research at German universities. REBIRTH will receive a total of around €42 million in funding for 5 years.
(stz) This cluster combines excellent education with innovative science and experimental as well as clinical medicine. In the program, interactive basic research projects are designed to find substances at the level of cells or - even smaller - molecules that stimulate regenerative processes. Both internal and environment-dependent mechanisms for controlling the programming of cell and organ processes influenced by genes and the environment and disease-dependent regeneration are taken into account. The program tests innovative approaches for regenerative therapies using novel cell sources. The MHH is working together with strong partners from the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover Foundation and Leibniz University Hannover, who complement the medical expertise with engineering, chemistry, biophotonics and nanotechnology. Against the background of the MHH's significant previous achievements, the cluster specializes in diseases of the hematopoietic system, the heart, the respiratory system, the liver and beta cells from the pancreas.
