Outpatient billing
The "Outpatient Billing" department is responsible for billing all patients with statutory health insurance (emergencies, outpatient surgery, university outpatient clinics, outpatient specialist care), self-pay patients and other payers.
The Outpatient Billing department is the point of contact for questions regarding the above-mentioned billing forms and institute authorizations vis-à-vis the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians of Lower Saxony and the health insurance companies.
Inpatient billing
In the subject area "Inpatient billing", billing for all inpatient treatments takes place via the general hospital services. This includes DRG charges (Diagnosis Related Groups) as well as charges for pre- and post-inpatient and day clinic treatments. In addition, we bill for optional services such as single or double rooms and accompanying persons.
Further information on billing modalities and optional services can be found on the "Information for patients and relatives" page.

Notes on chief physician treatments
The services of the chief physician treatments, which include
- outpatient private medical/private dental treatments and
- inpatient elective treatments,
Depending on the Clinical Department/Institute, you will be invoiced directly by the Chief Medical Office or by an external billing company.
If you have any queries regarding invoices, please contact the respective invoicing company (e.g. unimed Abrechnungsservice für Kliniken und Chefärzte GmbH).
Private medical/dental treatment in the relevant Clinical Department can be contractually agreed between the patient and Hannover Medical School (MHH). Treatment is provided by physicians at the hospital. Delegation to non-medical staff is possible - to the extent permitted, of course. The hospital uses the scale of fees for physicians (GOÄ) and the scale of fees for dentists (GOZ) to invoice its services. The costs of treatment are to be borne by the patient. This applies irrespective of any claim for reimbursement against a cost bearer. Invoicing is based on the clinic or department, i.e. if another clinic/department or a physician entitled to receive payment is consulted, the patient will receive a separate invoice for these services.
When using the elective service "medical services", the choice cannot be limited to individual MHH physicians entitled to liquidation (Section 17 (3) KHEntgG). An agreement on optional medical services extends to all employed or civil servant physicians of MHH involved in the treatment of the patient, insofar as they are entitled to charge separately for their services in the context of full and partial inpatient as well as pre- and post-inpatient treatment (Section 115a SGB V), including the services of physicians and medically managed Facilities or Institutions outside the hospital arranged by these physicians. This also applies insofar as MHH itself charges for elective medical services.
The provisions of the current version of the German Medical Fee Schedule (GOÄ) apply to the invoicing of elective medical services. In accordance with Section 6a GOÄ, the fees for full, partial, pre- and post-inpatient elective / private medical services are reduced by 25%, including the applicable surcharges; for services provided by attending physicians and other registered physicians by 15%. As a rule, the physician's fee is charged separately by the hospital physicians entitled to liquidation, unless the hospital's administration or an external billing office acts on behalf of the physician entitled to liquidation.
The separately billable medical services, even if they are billed by the hospital, are provided by elective physicians of the specialist departments or the medically managed Facilities or Institutions in person or under the supervision of the elective physician in accordance with professional instructions from a subordinate physician of the Department or Institute (Section 4 (2) sentence 1 GOÄ/GOZ) or from the permanent medical representation (Section 4 (2) sentence 3 GOÄ/GOZ). These physicians are listed in a separate information booklet, which is handed out during administrative admission.
