Data Protection, Data Security and Ethics (BD P 12)

Qualification objectives

The module provides basic knowledge of Data Protection, Data Security and Data and Information Ethics, which must be taken into account in the planning and successful implementation of data science projects. Students deal with terms from data protection legislation and learn about the roles, rights and obligations of all parties involved. They also deal with ethical issues in the context of data science research.

Competencies

After successfully completing the module, students will be able to plan and implement data science projects

  1. fundamentally assess Data Protection and Data Security, recognize possible impairments and counter identified problems with suitable technical and organizational measures,
  2. weigh up ethical concerns in data collection, data processing, data storage, data transfer and data interpretation and thus ensure an appropriate balance between the interests of the various parties involved (data donors, researchers, industry, politics, etc.).

To this end, they are familiar with the ethical, legal and social framework conditions and

  1. are aware of their responsibility in the digitalization process and can assume this responsibility,
  2. are able to weigh up the risks and benefits for themselves, other stakeholders and society,
  3. and acquire decision-making skills (for or against) the application of certain procedures in the implementation of data science projects.
