Microbial pathogens (BD P 07)
Qualification objectives
The module teaches the basics of bacterial and viral pathogens in humans. Students learn about viral infection cycles in the cell as well as commensal and pathobiological colonization by bacteria. This module focuses on the pathogenicity mechanisms in the host, the resulting clinical pictures and the modes of action of antiviral/antibacterial therapies. Various aspects of systems biology are also included.
Competencies
Students are familiar with the theoretical principles, possible applications and limitations of experimental microbial research. Students acquire the competence to correctly understand and classify central concepts as well as current research results in the field of virology/bacteriology. Students master basic standard methods of microbiological research and can carry these out independently as well as evaluate and classify the results obtained. Students know the basic safety aspects of working with infectious agents in the S2 laboratory as well as the concepts of genetic engineering safety and the principles of virological methods in research and diagnostics. By studying pathogenicity mechanisms, students gain a deeper insight into the relationship between pathogen and host.
