Virology (BM P 6)
Qualification objectives
The module teaches the basics of experimental and clinical virology. Students acquire an understanding of the viral infection cycles in the cell, the pathogenicity mechanisms in the host, the diseases caused by viruses, the mechanisms of the antiviral immune response and the modes of action of antiviral therapies and are familiar with the special features of the different virus families. By attending the lecture, students are prepared for the internship and the literature seminar, as they have become familiar with the theoretical foundations, possible applications and limitations of experimental virological research.
Competences
Students acquire the competence to correctly understand and classify central concepts as well as current research results in the field of virology. Students are proficient in basic standard methods of virology and can carry these out independently as well as evaluate and classify the results obtained. Students know the basic safety aspects of working with infectious agents in the S2 laboratory as well as the concepts of genetic engineering safety and the principles of virological methods in research and diagnostics.
