November 2018
Juliane Tetzlaff's disputation took place on November 30, 2018, which she successfully passed. We congratulate Juliane Tetzlaff and are delighted that she will remain in the project team.
Lena Röbbel and the "Return to work after breast cancer" project team submitted an abstract for the 28th German Pension Insurance Rehabilitation Colloquium, which will take place in Berlin in April 2019. Batoul Saffiedine would like to present the results of her evaluations at the 15th Congress of the European Forum for Research and Rehabilitation (EFRR), which is taking place at the same time. The project team has also submitted an abstract for the 4th Interdisciplinary Congress Quality of Cancer Care (QoCC). We are keeping our fingers crossed!
September 2018
At this year's Joint Congress of the German Society for Medical Psychology and the German Society for Medical Sociology, which took place in Leipzig from September 26-28, 2018, several members of the Department gave short presentations (abstracts are linked):
- Juliane Tetzlaff spoke about growing health inequalities in multimorbidity,
- Stefanie Sperlich presented her analyses of the relationship between changes in physical activity and health trends between 1995 and 2013, and
- Jelena Epping took part in a methods session of the Junior Research Group, where she presented the results of the longitudinal data analysis on the influence of social status on the probability of a re-infarction.
On Thursday, September 27, 2018, an anniversary symposium was held in honour of Prof. Dr. Dr. Johannes Siegrist, which was moderated by Siegfried Geyer. Stefanie Sperlich gave a presentation on gratification crises in domestic and family work. The concept is based on the model of gratification crises in professional work, which was developed by Johannes Siegfriest.
July 2018
Our research proposal to the German Research Foundation was approved in winter 2018. This enables us to expand our research work in the field of "Morbidity compression and its alternatives" and to enlarge the team. We welcome our new colleague Johannes Beller, whose background in psychology and strong statistical skills make him an excellent addition to the team. We look forward to exciting discussions in which demographic, sociological and psychological aspects can now flow together.

Juliane Tetzlaff, Stefanie Sperlich and Jelena Epping are actively represented at this year's DGMS congress in Leipzig at the end of September. Juliane Tetzlaff reports on the growing health inequalities in multimorbidity, Stefanie Sperlich presents the results of the analysis on the influence of physical activity on health trends in the older population. She will also give a lecture at the anniversary symposium for Prof. Dr. Johannes Siegrist. Jelena Epping will present the results on the influence of social status on myocardial infarction at the workshop symposium on the analysis of longitudinal data.
February 2018
Jelena Epping has successfully passed her disputation for her doctorate in Public Health and completed the doctoral procedure with distinction (summa cum laude). We congratulate her and wish her continued success.
The first results from the project on returning to work after breast cancer were presented at the 27th Rehabilitation Science Colloquium in Munich on February 26, 2018. Dorothee Noeres, Lena Röbbel and Batoul Saffiedine presented a poster on social service counseling.
September 2017
Our Department was well represented at the DGMS Congress in Lübeck:
- Stefanie Sperlich organized and moderated a workshop on "Health inequality and social structure - what kind of society do we live in?"
- She also moderated the session "Medical Sociological Theories" on Tuesday and gave a lecture on "Development of subjective health 1995-2014 - Does the trend differ according to gender and life stage?" on Wednesday.
- On Wednesday morning,Juliane Tetzlaff moderated the session on "Effects of social and economic inequality on health" together with Thomas Lampert. On Thursday, she presented her poster "The relationship between multimorbidity and everyday impairments over time - evidence of a dynamic equilibrium?".
- Felix Barre also gave a short presentation on his poster on "Contextual factors of mothers and fathers in mother/father-child interventions".
- Together with Enno Swart, Jelena Epping moderated the session "Collection and use of secondary data" on Wednesday. In the afternoon, she gave her presentation "Do higher-earning men have a higher chance of receiving a donor kidney? Gender and income differences in kidney transplantation".
It was the first congress to be jointly organized by three societies. This enabled a change of perspective beyond the individual research areas of social physicians, medical sociologists and epidemiologists. This was impressively expressed by the chairs of the three specialist societies in a joint opening speech.
June 2017
At this year's DGMS Annual Congress in Lübeck, Juliane Tetzlaff, Felix Barre, Stefanie Sperlich and Jelena Epping will present the results of their analyses in the form of lectures and posters. Stefanie Sperlich is also organizing and moderating a workshop on "Health inequality and social structure - what kind of society do we live in?". Juliane Tetzlaff and Jelena Epping chair several sessions at the congress.

Denise Muschik has successfully passed the Dr. Public Health defense. We congratulate her and wish her every success in her future career in the world of big data.
July 2016
Start of the research project "Return to work after breast cancer: A prospective, multicenter study to improve reintegration into working life". The project runs for three years and is funded by Deutsche Rentenversicherung Bund.
Prof. Dr. Siegfried Geyer gave the opening lecture at the 10th Criminology Colloquium in Göttingen on 8 July 2016 under the title "Power distributions and power shifts in German hospitals - the medical sociological perspective".
June 2016
Dr. Maren Mylius, PH, was awarded the SOPHIA Prize of 1,000 euros by Soroptimist International Germany in Hanover in June 2016 for her work "Health and illness of undocumented migrants. Medical care and the specific role of health authorities". We are very pleased about this award for our doctoral student.

At this year's DGMS Annual Congress in September 2016, Juliane Tetzlaff presents the results on the temporal development of life years associated with multimorbidity on the basis of SHI data.
March 2016
Juliane Tetzlaff, Denise Muschik, Jelena Epping and Siegfried Geyer took part in the workshop of the Working Group for the Collection and Use of Secondary Data (AGENS) at the Helmholtz Zentrum München. Siegfried Geyer gave a presentation on the topic "Is diabetes prevalence equal to diabetes prevalence? Differences in prevalence estimates based on survey and SHI data".
September 2015
We are represented with numerous contributions at this year's DGMS Congress in Regensburg:
- Juliane Tetzlaff reports on the DEAS evaluation of the morbidity compression hypothesis;
- Felix Barre presents for the first time data on the health status of fathers who took part in a father-child measure;
- Denise Muschik presents the analysis results on the age at onset and death of diabetes patients in order to also address the morbidity compression hypothesis;
- Dr. Stefanie Sperlich reports on the burden of household and family work on mothers;
- In her short presentation,Jelena Jaunzeme discusses the duration of sick leave among psychotherapy patients.
In her role as spokesperson for the junior researchers working group, Anja Knöchelmann, in collaboration with Nico Vonneilich from Hamburg, organizes the pre-conference workshop "Scientific Publishing" for junior researchers, as well as a session at the congress entitled "New Research Impulses in Medical Sociology and Social Epidemiology". In addition, several members of staff will moderate individual sessions at the congress.
June 2015
On 18 June, Prof. Dr. Siegfried Geyer gave a lecture at the AOK Symposium on the topic "Sick later and healthy longer? Morbidity compression and its consequences". Representatives of health insurance companies, trade unions, employers' associations and state politicians discussed the effects of morbidity trends on the design of healthcare policy with the scientists.
Prof. Dr. Siegfried Geyer and Jelena Jaunzeme took part in the working meeting of the Working Group on the Collection and Use of Secondary Data (AGENS) in Berlin on 16 June 2015, which set many cornerstones for the further development of AGENS' work. The next meeting will take place at the MHH on October 20.
February 2015
The Department was represented by several members of staff at this year's AGENS methods workshop, which took place in Freiburg im Breisgau from February 19 to 20. Juliane Tetzlaff presented her thoughts on the definition of multimorbidity, which were discussed in detail. Prof. Dr. Dr. Siegfried Geyer, Denise Muschik and Jelena Jaunzeme actively participated in shaping future work with secondary data.
September 2014:
On September 12, 2014, the handbook "Routine Data in Healthcare" was published (editors: Swart, E., Ihle, P., Gothe, H., Matusiewicz, D.). Prof. Dr. Siegfried Geyer and Jelena Jaunzeme have published two articles in this book on health surveys and aggregate data as well as on the possibilities and limitations of survey data and statutory health insurance data.
From the cover: "The book is aimed at scientists and students in all areas of health care as well as executives in medicine, economics and politics."
This year's joint congress of the German Society for Medical Psychology and the German Society for Medical Sociology took place in Greifswald. The Research and Teaching Unit Medical Sociology was strongly represented with six members of staff. Prof. Dr. Siegfried Geyer was elected Chairman of the German Society for Medical Sociology.
August 2014:
Stefanie Sperlich, Florian Trachte, Denise Muschik and Jelena Jaunzeme actively participated in the congress of the European Society for Medical Sociology(ESHMS) in Helsinki at the end of August 2014. Four presentations were given on the following topics:
- Stress in household and family work,
- Income, physical activity and the compression of morbidity,
- Assigning the education of one spouse to the other,
- Social inequality in utilization of outpatient psychotherapy.
The employees returned to Hanover with many ideas for future research projects.
May 2014:
Dorothee Noeres successfully completed her Dr. rer. biol. hum. with the disputation on May 15, 2014. We congratulate our colleague and look forward to working with her in the future!
Several members of the Medical Sociology department received confirmation that their abstracts have been accepted for the congress of the European Society for Health and Medical Sociology, which will take place in Helsinki in August 2014. We are looking forward to participating in the congress and the opportunity to exchange experiences with European colleagues.
February 2014:
On February 13-14, 2014, the sixth AGENS methods workshop took place in Hanover. The AGENS Methods Workshop is a platform for users of routine healthcare data, where existing and new methods are presented and discussed.
More than 120 participants from all over Germany and Austria came together for this year's AGENS methods workshop. We discussed the validity and plausibility checks in SHI data, possibilities of linking primary and secondary data, operationalization peculiarities of such concepts as social situation or diabetes prevalence rate.
September 2013:
Dr. Stefanie Sperlich, Friederike Otto, Florian Trachte, Jelena Jaunzeme and Prof. Dr. Dr. Siegfried Geyer actively participated in this year's congress of the German Society for Medical Sociology in Marburg. Stefanie Sperlich and Siegfried Geyer moderated several sessions. PhD student Florian Trachte presented the results of his socially-stratified analysis of morbidity compression. Jelena Jaunzeme presented the results of the secondary data analysis on the utilization of psychotherapy subject to application.
March 2013:
Friederike Otto and Jelena Jaunzeme took part in this year's Rehabilitation Science Colloquium of the German Pension Insurance in Mainz. Friederike Otto gave a presentation on the prescription of psychotherapy and psychotropic drugs before and after a mother-child measure. Jelena Jaunzeme presented a poster on the analysis of incapacity for work data from participants in a mother-child program.
August 2012:
From August 30 to September 1, 2012, the Research and Teaching Unit Medical Sociology hosted the annual congress of the European Society of Health and Medical Sociology (ESHMS) and the German Societies for Medical Sociology(DGMS) on the grounds of Hannover Medical School.
