Welcome

on the website of the Department of Medical Sociology

The central research topic of medical sociology is the role of social factors in the onset and course of diseases. We are currently investigating how diseases and restrictions develop over time and and which groups are particularly affected by the increase in morbidity.

The "Family Health Research Network", which is anchored in Medical Sociology, conducts studies on the effectiveness of preventive and rehabilitation measures for mothers, fathers and children as well as for family caregivers and carries out basic research on family health.

Current

Here we report on our team's activities and events:

July 2025

Our colleague Claudia Kirsch in her role as Scientific Director of the Family Health Research Network, was invited to Bellevue Palace by Elke Büdenbender, the wife of the Federal President and patron of the Mothers' Convalescence Service (MGW), to attend the festive ceremony to mark the 75th anniversary of the Mothers' Convalescence Service. In addition to a welcoming address by Elke Büdenbender, the Federal Minister of Housing, Urban Development and Building, Verena Hubertz, and the Federal Minister of Education, Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth, Karin Prien, also spoke and emphasized the necessity of the MGW's work.

January 2025

Our application on the topic"INDICA: INtersectional Vulnerabilities in DIabetes HealthCAre: Identifying and Addressing Health Disparities in Lower Saxony" was selected for funding as part of the "New Approaches, Methods and Perspectives in the Life Sciences and Biomedicine: Sex, Gender and Diversity in Health Services Research" call by the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture. We are excited to see what we will find out about health inequalities in diabetes care over the four years of funding.

December 2024

Our employee Mrs. Dr. Batoul Safieddine was awarded the Gesellschaft der Freunde der MHH e.
