Teaching

Medical sociology deals with the social factors associated with health and illness. The focus is on the following topics:

  • The development and course of illnesses and complaints as well as differences in the use of health services depending on indicators of social situation (socialization and social inequality),
  • the social organization of health and illness (the German healthcare system against the background of demographic ageing)
  • the importance of prevention and health promotion.

The importance of these medical-sociological topics for medical practice is the guiding principle for the orientation of the curriculum. The focus is on the transfer of theory into medical practice. We teach this content in module 201 "Psychological and sociological foundations of medicine" of the HannibaL (Hannoveran Integrated Boccupation-oriented Adaptated Lehre) in cooperation with the Research and Teaching Unit Medical Psychology. In addition, together with our colleagues in Medical Psychology, we also organize the interviewing internship in Module 202 "Diagnostic Methods" as well as preparatory courses in the first year of study. Further information on the HannibaL study programmes here.

Medical Sociology staff also teach on the Master's degree program in Public Health. We are responsible for the modules "Research Methods II - Empirical Social Research and Statistics" and "Statistics and Special Methods of Quantitative Social Research".
