3rd Neurooncology Symposium
The Neurooncology Symposium of the Clinical Department of Neurosurgery took place on 21.11.2012 for the third time in cooperation with the Tumor Center of the MHH and the German Brain Tumor Aid.
Neurologists, neurosurgeons and hemato-oncologists from all over Lower Saxony were invited to the symposium with the central theme "Current concepts for the diagnosis and treatment of intracranial meningiomas".
PD Dr. med. R. Ketter from the Clinical Department of Neurosurgery at Saarland University Hospital, Homburg/Saar, spoke on the topic of "Individual therapy strategies for patients with meningiomas based on their genetic progression score GPS" and Prof. Dr. med. C. Mawrin from the Institute of Neuropathology at Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg spoke on the topic of "Neuropathological diagnostics of meningiomas and other benign brain tumors".

Patient forum "Let the pain go!
On November 14, 2012, the German Pain League invited patients to the event "Schmerz lass nach! - Information on treatment options for severe chronic and neuropathic pain" at the Sheraton Pelikan Hotel in Hanover.
Prof. Joachim K. Krauss, Director of the Clinical Department of Neurosurgery and representative of Hannover Medical School, gave a lecture on "Neuromodulation for chronic pain - proven methods and new developments" and answered questions from affected patients.

Meeting of the German Society for Skull Base Surgery
The German Society for Skull Base Surgery (DGSB) under the leadership of Prof. Gellrich (Director of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, MHH) met for its 20th annual conference from October 10-13, 2012 in Hanover.
Dr. med. Sabine Hertz, Dr. Shadi Al-Afif, Dr. Seoong Wong Kim, Mr. Ioannis Petrakakis, Dr. Ariyan Pirayesh, Dr. Götz Lütjens and Dr. Bujung Hong, physicians from the Clinical Department of Neurosurgery, gave specialist lectures; Prof. Joachim K. Krauss, Prof. Makoto Nakamura and Dr. Elvis Hermann gave overview lectures from the neurosurgical field.

ESSFN Congress in Lisbon
The European Society for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery (ESSFN) met from September 26-29, 2012 for its 20th annual meeting in Lisbon/Portugal.
Prof. Joachim K. Krauss, Acting President of the ESSFN, gave the opening address and an obituary for Prof. Mundinger, one of the pioneers of functional neurosurgery, who passed away in May 2012.

Scholarship
The ERICH UND EMMY HOSELMANN Foundation, represented by Mr. Heiner Hild, has awarded the Clinical Department of Neurosurgery a grant of € 13,000. Prof. Joachim K. Krauss, Director of the Clinical Department of Neurosurgery, Prof. Makoto Nakamura, Deputy Director and Prof. Kerstin Schwabe, Head of Experimental Neurosurgery, accepted the cheque on 02.08.2012.
The ERICH AND EMMY HOSELMANN Foundation is a Hanover-based foundation that promotes cancer research and cancer aid. The grant will be used for research in neuro-oncology.

3rd Spine Surgery Course of the German Society for Neurosurgery (DGNC) and German Spine Society (DWG)
Prof. Krauss is supporting the 3rd Spine Surgery Course of the Spine Section of the German Society for Neurosurgery (DGNC), which will take place on 07.09.-08.09.2012 at the Center of Anatomy of the MHH in Hanover.

Awards
- The scientific paper entitled "GPi-DBS may induce a hypokinetic gait disorder with freezing of gait in patients with dystonia" (authors: Schrader C, Capelle HH, Kinfe TM, Blahak C, Bäzner H, Lütjens G, Dressler D, Krauss JK) was awarded the Oppenheim Prize of the German Dystonia Society. The prize was awarded on June 23, 2012 at the annual conference of the German Dystonia Society in Brühl near Cologne.
- Dr. Christoph Lindemann was awarded the Neuromodulation Poster Prize of the German Society for Neurosurgery (DGNC) for his work entitled "Retrograde 6-hydroxydopamine induced lesions of the motor associated dorsolateral striatum differently affect neuronal discharge activity and patterns in lateral and medial parts of the rat subthalamic nucleus". The prize will be awarded on December 5, 2012 at the 31st DGNC advanced training course in Seeheim-Jugenheim and is endowed with € 500.

Hygiene Prize of the "Clean Hands Campaign"
Intensive Care Unit 34 with the Clinical Department of Neurosurgery was awarded the "Aktion saubere Hände" hygiene prize at the MHH annual reception on May 9, 2012.
The prize is awarded to wards that adhere to special hygiene standards. Ward 34 had the best increase in compliance over a period of three years. Ward manager Ms. Kugler accepted the award from Dr. Tecklenburg. The prize is endowed with €2,000.

Awards
- Ms. Florence Choumin, Clinical Department of Neurosurgery, was awarded a prize for the best presentation entitled AxiEM - navigated, intraventricular, endoscopic cyst fenestration in infants at the annual meeting of the "Endoscopic Neurosurgery, Neuronavigation and Intraoperative Imaging" section of the German Society for Neurosurgery (DGNC) in Neubrandenburg in April 2012.
- Mr. Mihai Manu, Clinical Department of Neurosurgery, was awarded the "Traugott-Riechert Prize" 2012 for his research project entitled Comparative imaging of neuronal activity in the globus pallidus internus in patients with dystonia and Tourette syndrome in the context of implantation of electrodes for deep brain stimulation. The prize, which is endowed with €5,000, will be awarded at the annual meeting of the German Society of Neurosurgery in Leipzig in June 2012.

Third-party funding for research project
The German Research Foundation (DFG) awarded Prof. Dr. med. Joachim K. Krauss and Prof. Kerstin Schwabe a grant of 180,408 euros for 36 months for the deposition of colloidal Ptlr nanoparticles to optimize the impedance of conduction and stimulation electrodes during neurosurgical procedures.
