A strong network for those affected and their relatives - brain tumor group in Hanover officially founded

The founding members of the self-help group with Dr. Polemikos (third from left) and Lea Kauffmann (back row, fourth from left), among others.

An important step for the support of brain tumor patients and their relatives was celebrated yesterday in Hanover: The "foundation of the new self-help group for brain tumor sufferers and their families". The foundation was initiated and accompanied by Alia Schilling and Lea Kauffmann, who, together with the Clinical Department of Neurosurgery at Hannover Medical School (MHH) and the support of Prof. Dr. med. Krauss (Director of the Clinical Department of Neurosurgery and Head of the Neurooncology Center) and Dr. med. Manolis Polemikos (Senior Physician at the Clinical Department of Neurosurgery, Coordinator of the Neurooncology Center) worked for several months on the implementation and
public relations work. The group is supported by a medical advisory board, which is coordinated by founding members Dr. Polemiklos and Prof. Dr. Krauss.

The 15 participants at the first meeting already showed impressively how important such a space for exchange and support is. Lea Kauffmann, who works as an Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) with her colleagues every day in nursing care and oncological nursing advice in neurosurgery at the MHH, emphasizes: "We experience every day how those affected and their relatives are faced with enormous challenges when they are diagnosed with a brain tumour
. Discussion groups offer much-needed support and guidance." Special thanks go to the Hanover University of Applied Sciences and Arts Faculty V, Diaconia, Health and Social Affairs, which has made its premises available and thus made it possible to set up the group.

Inspiration from Hesse - nationwide networking
The idea for the group came about when Lea Kauffmann met Alia Schilling and Frank von der Heyde from the Hirntumor-Selbsthilfegruppe e.V. at #YESCON2024, the largest conference for cancer patients. The commitment of the two from Central Hesse to establish regional groups and offer support to those affected nationwide became the inspiration for the new project in Hanover.Alia Schilling, author and former family member, presented her self-published book "Leben und Sterben mit einem Hirntumor" (Living and Dying with a Brain Tumor) at the launch, in which she gives an impressive account of the challenges and valuable moments in life with a brain tumor patient. Her book is encouraging and underlines the importance of solidarity and exchange. They are an indispensable support in difficult times for those affected and their relatives."

Management team and future plans
The group is supported by a dedicated management team from the Hanover region:
- Verena Wohlgemuth and Theda Kröger (group leaders)
- Lea Kauffmann (founder and coordinator)
- Ulrich Musmann (responsible for press and public relations)
- Alia Schilling & Frank von der Heyde (coordination)

The next meetings:
- December 20, 2024, 5:00-6:30 pm, online via Zoom
- January 3, 2025, 4:00-6:30 pm, guided tour of the Marburg Ion Beam Therapy Center (MIT), Albrecht Kossel Str. 1, 35043 Marburg
- January 17, 2025, 5:00-6:30 pm, live and online, Hanover University of Applied Sciences and Arts - Faculty V, Blumhardtstr. 2, 30625 Hanover, meeting point parking lot

In addition to personal exchange, joint online lectures on current topics such as new treatment methods, TTF therapy and palliative care are planned. The group aims to be a place where people can strengthen and inform each other and find ways through the disease together.

An important step for Hanover and those affected
The founding of the group in Hanover marks another milestone in the care and support of brain tumor patients. The initiative shows how networking, cooperation and commitment can help those affected in their difficult situation.
