FAQ - ERASMUS+
Applications are open to trainees from all training professions at MHH (e.g. Nursing, OTA/ATA, MTLA, MTA, speech therapy, physiotherapy, bakery, administration and many more). The internship must be completed during training or up to 12 months after the end of training.
MHH employees can also be supported by the project and, for example, exchange professional experience with colleagues at Clinical Departments in other European countries and gain new inspiration for their everyday work.
Neither age nor nationality are relevant for an application.
Please speak to your head of school or department first. If the stay abroad is approved, please contact the Erasmus+ project manager in the Nursing department Ina Buchroth .
Information events for Erasmus+ are offered annually as part of the training at the school. After the information event, submit your application with a letter of motivation to your course leader.
They will then decide on the basis of the letter of motivation, your existing absences and your academic and practical achievements whether you are eligible for international mobility as part of your training.
Once you have received a positive re-registration from the course management, download the application documents from the MHH Nursing homepage and start looking for a suitable internship abroad. Once you have found an internship, submit all the documents to the project manager.
You will then have a personal appointment with the project manager to sign the scholarship contract and complete the business trip application. Please bring your planned arrival and departure times with you. In addition to the scholarship contract and the statement of costs, the trainees will also receive the confirmation of learning stay to take with them. This will be signed and stamped by the host Facilities or Institutions at the end of the internship abroad.
Trainees in the healthcare sector (with a focus on nursing professionals and OTAs/ATAs) can apply for an Erasmus+ scholarship if they...
- are in a training relationship with a healthcare institution
- are released from work for a period of 4 - 6 weeks by your training institution for an internship abroad in one of the participating EU countries via Erasmus+ (consult with your training institution or your vocational school teachers)
- plan an internship that is closely related to your training and meets the quality standards
- have sufficient command of the working language and basic knowledge of the local language
For external applications, we require a written declaration of consent from the training school. The form can be found in the application forms on the homepage.
If you are interested in working at Clinical Departments abroad, please contact Ms. Buchroth for advice. The prerequisite for mobility is the agreement of your department head or supervisor.
You will then look independently for a suitable Facilities or Institutions for the work shadowing; you may already have contacts via the MHH. Once you have been accepted, a program for the stay abroad will be agreed with the Clinical Department and you will use this information to fill out the application documents for the scholarship and the business trip application. Ms. Buchroth, the project manager, will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
On your return, submit the confirmation of your stay from the host institution and the participant report (EU questionnaire) to the project manager.
Here you will find a graphic overview of the procedure before departure. You can also obtain a detailed information sheet on the procedure from your responsible teacher at your training school or alternatively on request directly from the MHH project manager.
It is expected that you will first look for a suitable internship on your own, as we assume that you know best which country you would like to go to and why.
The experience reports on the MHH Nursing page can also provide inspiration for your search.
If required, the project manager Ms. Buchroth will advise you on suitable internships and support you with contacts to Facilities or Institutions in Europe.
If you need help finding an internship, please complete the "Internship search form" on the homepage and send it to Ms. Buchroth. An attempt will be made to find you a suitable internship, but there is no guarantee.
Erasmus+ enables funded internships abroad in all EU countries (as well as their overseas territories), the EU accession candidates Turkey and Macedonia and the EEA countries (Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway).
Internships in Switzerland are also possible by arrangement.
Internships of 4-6 weeks for MHH trainees and external applicants throughout Germany can be funded via the project.
Funded Erasmus mobility for employees generally lasts one week; in exceptional cases, other periods can be agreed for justified reasons.
After consultation with your training institution, you can replace a domestic placement as part of your training with a suitable placement abroad. This internship abroad can be financially supported by the project with EU funds. Your training salary will continue to be paid during your stay abroad.
Please note that the stay abroad must be agreed with the training school and the training company in order to be recognized.
Clinical Departments and mobile outpatient clinics, for example, are possible locations in the nursing sector.
Here you can find the current funding rates.
The grant consists of a daily allowance and a one-off travel allowance. If you only use environmentally friendly means of transportation (bus, train, etc.) for your arrival and departure, we will also pay a small "Green Travel Top-up".
Unfortunately, we cannot support internships that have already begun.
A complete application includes
- the confirmation of the foreign internship company (forwarding an email stating the internship dates is sufficient),
- the application and preparation form,
- an EU curriculum vitae and
- the Learning Agreement.
External applicants should also enclose a declaration of consent from the training company with their application.
You can obtain the Learning Agreement from Ms. Buchroth.
For some countries, a simple certificate of good conduct is also required, which you should apply for no later than 6 months before the start of the internship and attach to your application documents.
During working hours:
During working hours, you need mandatory public liability insurance, accident insurance and health insurance. For external applicants: Clarify with your training company whether you will continue to be insured at your workplace abroad as part of a business trip permit or whether the host institution will insure you. If neither is the case, you will have to arrange such insurance yourself. We cannot approve a scholarship before then!
MHH trainees fill out a business trip application before the internship abroad and are thus still adequately insured during their working time abroad.
During their free time abroad:
You are obliged (!) to take out additional private foreign insurance and to have private foreign liability cover (if you are still insured through your parents, you should find out whether your liability already includes this). Accident insurance is also required for the period of your stay, as you are not insured abroad outside of your working hours (unless you already have such insurance - please contact your parents).
You can find inexpensive insurance packages for your internship abroad at the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
The application documents are submitted by email. Handwritten documents will not be accepted.
Please always state your school in any Communications with the Erasmus+ project management.
In some countries, certain vaccinations are compulsory if you work in the healthcare sector. You should always check this with the host institution in good time. All participants must be vaccinated twice against COVID19!
Funding is provided in lump sums and depends on the length of stay (usually between 4-8 weeks) and the cost of living in the respective destination country. 80% of the total scholarship will be paid to you before the mobility. Please find out in advance about the cost of living at your destination and plan carefully. It is up to you how you manage your money and calculate costs for rent, food, travel to and from your destination. This is a mobility grant, not a full scholarship.
After your return, you must submit proof of your stay abroad to the project management. It is therefore essential that you keep flight tickets, the original tickets (if traveling by train), the original hotel bill/pension bill/rental contracts, etc.
It is necessary to have a sufficient command of the working language of the internship. It is also strongly recommended that you acquire at least a basic knowledge of the local language prior to your mobility. Language learning apps or online language courses are suitable for this.
Trainees doing an Erasmus+-funded internship abroad are asked to take an online language test for the working language of the internship before their stay abroad.
The language tests are taken via the Online Linguistic Support (OLS) portal once funding has been approved. The invitation is issued automatically via a registration by the project management.
If the working language is the same as the native language, the language test is not required.
The results of the tests are not decisive for the scholarship, but are used by the EU to collect data. Information on this can be found under Online Linguistic Support.
The search for accommodation is carried out independently. Some host institutions provide accommodation for a reasonable rent, but not all of them. It is up to you whether you are looking for a guest house, a hotel, a shared flat (usually for interim rent), a host family, etc. You can find out about this via websites or tourist information offices, for example. There are no limits to your creativity, as long as it is safe and reputable.
You should gain an authentic insight into the working methods and processes in the respective target country. This means that you must comply with the country-specific requirements and its working methods and working time laws. Our experience confirms that our exchange participants are treated fairly and justly.
Yes, you must arrive at the latest on the day specified as the start of the internship on the Learning Agreement and leave at the earliest on the last day of the internship specified on the Learning Agreement! Otherwise you may be required to pay back the daily accommodation allowance.
Yes, if you have vacation time before or after your internship, you can spend it in your host country. You can arrange this vacation with your training institution.
In the event of difficulties or conflicts in the workplace, please first seek a discussion with your mentor, ward or department head abroad and try to resolve the conflict in an exchange. This is an opportunity to practise conflict resolution skills. See it as a valuable learning process, this is an important skill in everyday clinical practice when dealing with patients.
If the problem cannot be solved in this way, please contact Ms. Buchroth for a discussion with a possible intervention.
Please do not terminate the internship on your own initiative, as this will result in the funding being reclaimed.
Reporting sick follows the same rules as in Germany. On the day of illness, you report sick in the morning at your place of work abroad and at the German training school and state when you expect to be fit again. If you are sick for more than three days, you will need a physician's certificate. A period of illness during the internship does not mean that you have to break off the internship! As soon as you are well again, report to the training school and the place of work abroad and start your internship again.
The complete final documents consist of the following documents and must be received by the project management no later than one month after the end of the internship:
The originals are requiredby post:
- Proof of stay in the form of boarding passes, train tickets or fuel receipts, the rental agreement or a confirmation of residence with address and landlord,
- the signed and stamped confirmation of learning stay (you have received the form),
- the signed and printed online questionnaire (participant report)
The final report will also be sentby email to the Erasmus representative.
This should be a detailed report with pictures and at least 1-2 pages. Examples of experience reports can be found on the MHH website.
Please note that if you take photos of third parties, make sure that they give you their written consent for publication! Without such consent, these photos cannot be published.
After receipt of the complete final documents, the remaining 2nd installment of the scholarship amount will be transferred to you.
The Participant report is a web-based questionnaire from the European Commission and a mandatory part of every Erasmus+ mobility.
You will automatically receive an email from the project management asking you to complete an online questionnaire, the Participant report, after your internship abroad.
Participation is mandatory!
The Erasmus+ certificate certifies that the scholarship holder has successfully completed an internship within the framework of Erasmus+.
Once all final documents have been received by the project management, the certificate will be sent to you by email.
This depends on the requirements of your German training school. On request, Ms. Buchroth will send you an evaluation form in German, English or French if the school does not provide its own forms.
