We treat and nurse patients of all ages who have a congenital heart defect. We offer a wide range of services to provide our patients and their families with the best possible support. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Our Nursing is based on the MHH mission statement and the nursing concept of Hannover Medical School. It is planned, carried out and evaluated in a patient-oriented manner, taking into account the psychosocial situation. We are responsible for a certain number of patients within the scope of departmental nursing.

Our nursing team consists of full-time and part-time registered nurses (some with additional qualifications such as practice instructors). Due to the special requirements of the surgical area, we are supported by a nursing assistant and a federal volunteer.

Participation in internal and external training courses is an integral part of our Human Resources. We also hold regular team meetings and internal ward training sessions. New employees are introduced to their tasks according to an induction concept developed by the ward, which guarantees our patients a high standard of safety and care.

Regular team meetings are held to ensure effective Communications and a good exchange of information. Supervisions offer the team space to work through stressful issues.

We guarantee continuous care by working in a three-shift system in order to restore the well-being and health of our patients through interdisciplinary cooperation.

As part of the holistic care of our young patients, we work closely with the following professional groups

• the bridge team,
• physiotherapy and occupational therapy
• breastfeeding counseling
• nutritional counseling and dieticians,
• stoma therapy
  

Accommodation is provided in single, double and triple rooms.

The nursing focus is on the pre- and post-operative care of patients of all age groups with congenital heart defects.

In order to keep the inpatient stay as short as possible and to give you peace of mind in this stressful situation, it is an important objective for us to support you in the special Nursing of your child.


Range of care on ward 68b

Our task is the Nursing and monitoring of:

1. patients with congenital and acquired heart defects

• Pre- and postoperatively
• Before and after cardiac catheterization
• during heart failure therapy / medication adjustments
• after general surgical interventions
  

2. adult patients with congenital heart defects

• pre- and postoperatively
• before and after cardiac catheterization
  

3. patients with neurosurgical diseases before and after surgical interventions

• e.g. VP / VA shunt installation, after tumor removal, after skull / brain injuries
  

4. patients after dental / maxillofacial surgery

• e.g. cleft lip / jaw / palate

5. and patients following procedures in the Department of Plastic, Aesthetic, Hand and Reconstructive Surgery.

This includes, among other things, aseptic dressing changes and the handling of various supply and drainage lines, e.g. thoracic / wound drainage, central venous access including parenteral nutrition, VAC pump.

Ward 68b was completely renovated in 2015. All patient rooms are equipped with bathrooms and televisions. The generous space available allows us to accommodate an accompanying person in the inpatient area if required. While your child is in intensive care following a surgical procedure or for any other reason, you have the option of reserving a room in the nearby Mercure Hotel if you are not at home in Hanover or the Hanover region. If there is a medical indication, these costs will be covered by the health insurance companies.

The medical indication for the admission of an accompanying person is given up to the age of 8. This means that the costs for accommodation and meals for an accompanying person are covered by the health insurance company. Accompanying persons go to the MHH Canteen at lunchtime. There you will also receive a packed lunch for dinner and breakfast. Accompanying persons without a medical indication must provide for themselves. You can purchase meal vouchers in the Canteen and thus have the opportunity to eat there at lunchtime. There are also various bistros on the MHH grounds.

The entire ward is equipped with a central patient monitoring system.

A playroom and a quiet/retreat room for parents are available for our patients on the ward.

On the day of admission, please register your child at the admission desk of the pediatric clinic (opposite the porter).

Does your child have a cardiological condition? Then please go for an ECG after admission. You will then be admitted to ward 68b.

Does your child have a surgical condition? Then please come directly to our ward after admission. There, please report to us at the nursing support point (ward room).

The day of admission is filled with many examinations and medical consultations, so we ask you to stay on the ward. Unfortunately, there will also be waiting times. Please allow for these!

The informed consent discussion for examinations, anesthesia and surgical procedures always takes place in the afternoon.

If your child is allowed to leave the ward for medical reasons, they can be looked after in the children's hospital's "play oasis". For school-age children, there is the option of lessons at the bedside or in the clinic school.

We work closely with various parent and support associations. We therefore offer the following additional services:

• Wednesdays: Parents' consultation hour of "Herzkind e.V."
• fortnightly on Thursdays: Consultation hour of the EMAH group of "Herzkind e.V."

• You enter the MHH Children's Hospital (building K10) through the main entrance, cross the waiting hall and go down the corridor through the opposite door on the left.
• When you have reached the waiting area of the pediatric surgery outpatient clinic, take the elevator to level 2.
• As you exit the elevator, the entrance to ward 68b is on the left-hand side.

Please enter the ward WITHOUT ringing the bell and register at the nursing support point (ward room). This is located in the middle area of the ward.
