It is not only the diagnosis of cancer, chemotherapy and the many days on the ward that disrupt the normal everyday life of our patients and their families for a while. There are also many rules and instructions to follow at home. Especially at the beginning of treatment, there seems to be a huge amount of information that needs to be processed and implemented.
The BASIS team supports the children, adolescents and parents with advice, guidance, training and information on the ward from the time of diagnosis until the end of intensive chemotherapy.
One of five nurses from the BASIS team is usually on site during the day from Monday to Friday to prepare families for everyday life at home using the GPONG guide and the pediatric haematology and oncology handbook. They make recommendations, give tips and provide training on how to handle medication, for example. If necessary, the BASIS team also visits families for readmissions or outpatient visits to answer questions, discuss problems and find solutions if necessary.
