MHH spring concert with Smith & West

Almost 400 donors and members accepted the joint invitation from the Förderstiftung MHH plus and the Gesellschaft der Freunde der MHH to this year's spring concert on April 24, 2025. This time, the evening was all about the Beatles.

Around ten years ago, the two central funding institutions at Hannover Medical School established the tradition of the spring concert. Together, the Förderstiftung MHH plus and the Gesellschaft der Freunde wanted to give something back and say thank you to all those who support MHH as members or donors. And because there is hardly a better way to do this than with beautiful and emotional melodies, the idea was born to invite supporters to a concert at MHH once a year. The annual rhythm has remained the same, apart from a coronavirus break, and the format is deliberately kept varied and open.

Sometimes MHH members play music, sometimes it's external musicians. There is also a wide range of genres - from pop to pop, from classical to jazz. In 2025, the eighth spring concert in lecture hall F was dedicated to the Beatles for the first time. Michael J. Westphal and Uli Schmid, who have been playing the songs of the great band from Liverpool at their concert evenings for decades, were two very experienced musicians on stage who were able to create a similarly dense tapestry of sound with guitar and keyboard alone as the four-piece formation did in the 1960s. Their vocals also came amazingly close to the original.

Between the many great hits, the duo Smith & West kept their audience laughing with humorous dialogues. A mysterious and bizarre story about their musical beginnings in Hamburg in the 1960s and a series of near encounters with the famous band formed the narrative bracket for the concert evening. After a good hour and a half of concert enjoyment, filled to the brim with tapping feet, clapping hands and good humour, the satisfied guests were bid farewell into a friendly but cool spring evening.
