Hannover Medical School (MHH) was founded on 17 May 1965 as the first independent medical university in Germany: The concept of the integration model with closely interwoven research, teaching and patient care was a milestone on the path to modern medicine. To this day, MHH is one of the most innovative medical universities and most efficient university hospitals.
On Saturday, 17 May 2025, MHH will celebrate its 60-year success story as the only purely medical university in Germany with an academic celebration - with prominent guests from politics and science. Dr Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, will give the keynote speech. Greetings from Lower Saxony's Minister President Stephan Weil and three keynote speeches are on the programme: ‘Teaching and digitalisation’ by Prof. Dr Moritz Schmelzle, Director of the Department of General, Visceral and Transplant Surgery, ‘Research and translation’ by Prof. Dr Dr Thomas Thum, Director of the Institute for Molecular and Translational Therapy Strategies, and ‘Patient care and artificial intelligence’ by PD Dr Peter Raab, Head of Oncological Neuroradiology. In between, contemporary witnesses will tell how it all began.
Science slammer Simon McGowan and the awarding of honorary citizenship of MHH round off the programme.
