Next milestone reached: Germany's only pure medical university submits letter of intent to the Science Council.

Hanover Medical School (MHH) is taking bold steps towards the future and applying to become a University of Excellence in the nationwide competition for top-level research. MHH submitted its letter of intent to the Science Council today. ‘We are the only pure medical university in Germany to enter the race,’ explains MHH President Prof. Dr. Denise Hilfiker-Kleiner. ‘On our campus, we combine research, teaching and patient care at the highest level in an integration model with close links between science and clinical practice. As a supramaximal care provider, MHH stands for excellent, patient-oriented medicine, supported by science-based, translational teaching and interprofessional cooperation between all health professions.’
Lower Saxony's Minister of Science Falko Mohrs strongly supports MHH's application: "MHH has established itself as one of the leading medical universities in Germany, as a place of excellent biomedical basic and translational research that is oriented towards the needs of patients of all ages and aimed at alleviating and curing serious diseases.
With its focus on infection & immunity, transplantation & regeneration, and biomedical engineering & implant research, it is one of the leading institutions worldwide." Universities wishing to apply for the coveted funding under the Excellence Strategy of the German federal and state governments must have at least two Clusters of Excellence. In May, MHH was approved for two Clusters of Excellence, RESIST and Hearing4all. The next step is to submit the application by 12 November 2025. In autumn 2026, a decision will be made as to which universities will be awarded the prestigious title from 2027 onwards. Universities of Excellence receive funding of up to 15 million euros per year.
