Exchange of study places
With a study place exchange, you have the opportunity to change your place of study without having to take part in the regular application procedure at the new university. For a study place exchange, you first need an exchange partner. However, the MHH cannot provide you with one. We therefore recommend that you contact one of the numerous student exchange services available, such as

- etc.
Please note that the transfer to the Medical School may lead to an extension of your studies due to the university's own study organization.
Further information on the exchange of study places
Before submitting the application, check which documents from the other exchange universities require confirmation from the MHH Student Office and whether they may need to be submitted in the original for the exchange universities. The documents must then be uploaded by the exchange partner transferring to MHH as part of the application process. It is also possible to indicate the form in which the documents are required.
The swap must be applied for by the swap partner transferring to MHH via the online portal MHH Online Campus.
The supporting documents for the application can be uploaded there accordingly. Please also note the instructions for applying for the 1st or higher semester and for applying for a ring exchange.
Each application form must be accompanied by proof of
- the university entrance qualification,
- proof of German language proficiency, if applicable,
- a certificate of enrollment from the previous university and
- the declaration of consent* of the exchange partner transferring away from MHH .

Provisional approval of the exchange application without the required evidence is not possible.
*If you do not yet have the matriculation number for a new application, please use the application number from the MHH Online Campus in the required places instead.
- Exchange permits are only issued for full study places.
- The exchange partners must be enrolled in the same study programme at another German university at the time of application.
- The special requirements for swapping into the 1st and higher semesters must also be observed.
From the winter semester 2022/23, it will no longer be possible to swap places for the first semester at Hannover Medical School.
Exceptions are possible if important health, social or economic reasons can be invoked.
These exist in particular if
- the applicant is undergoing permanent medical treatment in the Hannover Region
- the applicant is registered in the Hannover Region together with a spouse/life partner and their own child , or
- the applicant works as a medical and/or nursing professional in the Hannover Region.
- the applicant is a registered carer - Nursing of relatives in the Hannover Region
Corresponding proof must be attached to the exchange application. A field for uploading the evidence is provided in the application form.
At the MHH, the academic year always begins in the winter semester (WS). Therefore, only applications for "exchange of study places" for the following higher semesters are possible:

A prerequisite for the exchange of study places in the higher semester is that the exchange partner who is transferring to the MHH must have the performance level for admission to the desired exchange semester at the time of application. The performance level of the MHH student is not relevant. Check the performance level of the exchange partner transferring to MHH using the respective checklist(Human medicine / dentistryaccording to the new ZApprO / dentistry according to the old ZApprO ).
Examples:
- Swap partner A (MHH): Enrolment: 7th semester, performance status: 5th semester - Swap partner B (University X): Enrolment: 7th semester, performance status: 5th semester - swap not possible
- Exchange partner A (MHH): Enrolment: 7th semester, performance level: 5th semester - Exchange partner B (University X): Enrolment: 7th semester, performance level : 7th semester - Exchange possible
- Exchange partner A (MHH): Enrolment : 5th semester, performance level: 5th semester - Exchange partner B (University X): Enrolment: 7th semester, performance level: 5th semester - exchange possible
Proof of the performance level of the exchange partner transferring to MHH must be attached to the application form. A corresponding field for uploading is provided in the application form for this purpose.
Exchange applications for the 1st semester can be submitted in the following periods:
- Winter semester: June 1 to September 30 at the latest
Exchange applications for the higher semester for the model study programs Human medicine and Dentistry can be submitted in the following periods:
- Summer semester: December 1 to January 15 at the latest
- Winter semester: June 1 to July 15 at the latest
After approval of the exchange of study places, the following apply
- The student leaving the MHH must submit an application for de-registration.
- In return, the exchange partner must apply for enrolment at MHH. If the exmatriculation certificate from the old university is not yet available, enrollment can be provisional.
Both applications must be submitted
- for the winter semester by September 15 and
- by March 15 for the summer semester .

If the MHH can prove, even after the exchange has been approved, that the exchange of study places is or was associated with monetary or non-cash benefits, the exchange will not be carried out or will be reversed.
The exchange will only be completed at the beginning of the following semester, even if approval is granted early. It is therefore essential that you first re-register for the following semester at your home university (transfer of semester fees) in order to secure your study place. Upon completion of the exchange, any fees already paid will be refunded.
Please note that the change to the model study programme Human medicine as well as to the study programme Human medicine at the MHH can lead to an extension of the study period due to the yearly study organization and the model study programme. We cannot check the extent of the possible extension of the study period in advance. If an extension of the study period is not an option for you, please check for yourself whether an application makes sense for you.
In principle, a ring exchange is also possible at Hannover Medical School if all other exchange conditions are also met. It is important that the person wishing to transfer to MHH submits the application in the online portal MHH Online Campus and enters the relevant details for the ring exchange there.
Note: When submitting the application, please make sure that all required documents from the other exchange universities are submitted, which must be signed by MHH. Other universities may require separate forms for the ring exchange. Please contact us for more information before submitting your application.
