Master of Science Public Health - Population and Professions

New interprofessional study programmes

The aim of the research-oriented Master's degree course is to address the publicly and politically formulated need for expertise in public health, healthcare research and the professionalization of healthcare professions and to enable students to take on scientifically sound tasks in healthcare institutions and in research in an increasingly complex healthcare system.

With its interdisciplinary approach, the study programmes is aimed at graduates who wish to deepen the knowledge they acquired in their first degree with specific, particularly methodological and population- and profession-related knowledge at Master's level.

Program profile

In addition to the population-related and healthcare-related components, two further aspects form the special profile of the Master's degree course: the research orientation combined with research-based learning and the interprofessional perspective, which is reflected in the composition of the students, the teaching staff and the teaching content.

To date, the study programme is the only public health course at a medical faculty in northern Germany and thus offers the opportunity to combine population-related topics with experience in patient care. The proximity to medicine and the associated intensive teaching of medically relevant aspects characterize the study programmes as well as a high research orientation, which is ensured by the participating lecturers from the various disciplines and institutions. At the same time, the Institute of Epidemiology, Social Medicine and Public Health Research in particular has a special proximity to health policy, to issues of health care management and to questions of the interprofessional organization of health care. The experience gained in this way becomes part of teaching geared towards current healthcare issues.

The Master's degree program promotes students' ability to work in interprofessional teams in research and healthcare. Interprofessionalism is made possible by the consistent orientation of the curriculum towards health-related tasks and research topics as well as research-oriented learning in interprofessional learning groups, which is mandatory in various modules. The degree program also allows students to focus on individual methodological, population or healthcare-related areas.

Qualification goals

A subsequent doctorate or habilitation allows further development in the direction of university and non-university research and teaching. The MHH offers the opportunity to complete a doctorate in public health.

All students receive a sound scientific education in the research-oriented Master's degree program. This involves teaching research skills using quantitative and qualitative methods, developing the ability to work scientifically, conducting and evaluating systematic literature searches and evidence syntheses such as health technology assessments, evaluating health economic and epidemiological studies, designing and conducting their own studies, analyzing data and publishing or presenting scientific findings.
