The social worker
Christine Heidemann
Christine Heidemann got to know the Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Liver Transplantation working group during a two-year internship as a social worker. Together with her team colleagues, she began working on the educational book "Hello liver, how's it going?", of which she is co-editor. The mother of five was initially able to stay with the team thanks to funding from the Billy Rubin e.V. support association, but later moved to a regional position. "From the very beginning, I was concerned with the question of how the psychosocial work could be further improved in order to better meet the difficult situation of parents and their children with liver transplants," says the qualified social worker, who has trained as a systemic counselor and as a crisis counselor in hospital. She accompanies the relatives on ward 61 A and in the liver outpatient clinic, advises on social law issues, takes care of time off work, applications for rehabilitation measures, questions about the disabled person's pass and care allowance. She trained as a transition trainer to teach young people about social law issues and how to deal with the authorities. If necessary, she refers them to therapists close to home. Christine Heidemann comments: "Psychotherapeutic support should be integrated into the treatment concept of transplanted children and adolescents and their caregivers and should not be optional."
