Franziska Herbst has worked at the Institute for General Practice and Palliative Care since July 2017, becoming Head of Research in May 2023. She currently leads the NOCA project and has previously managed various other projects, including the Dy@EoL, which was funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and awarded the 2021 funding prize by the German Association for Palliative Medicine. She also led the LoCatE project, which was funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG).
Franziska Herbst holds a Master's degree in Social Anthropology from the University of Heidelberg, having previously studied Social Anthropology at the University of Auckland (New Zealand) on a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). As part of her doctoral studies at the University of Heidelberg, she conducted medical anthropological research in Papua New Guinea, exploring the various ways in which biomedicine interacts with local medical traditions.
From 2015 to June 2017, Franziska Herbst worked as a researcher in the research unit of the Department of Palliative Medicine at Universitätsklinikum Erlangen, Friedrich-Alexander Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg. As part of her work, she researched the organisation and coordination of hospice and palliative care networks, and participated in a Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF)-funded project on multidrug-resistant bacterial microorganisms in end-of-life care. This project was awarded the funding prize by the German Association for Palliative Medicine. Alongside her research, Franziska Herbst was the scientific coordinator of the 15th World Congress of the European Association for Palliative Care (EAPC) in Madrid. She is also active in teaching.
In May 2022, Franziska Herbst was awarded the Venia Legendi in Empirical Health Sciences. The title of her habilitation thesis was "Interaction between Patients and Their Relatives in the Last Phase of Life, Using the Example of Dyads of Adult Children and Their Parents: Development of Recommendations for Action and Reflections on Research Methodology". Franziska Herbst is also a certified health scientist for registry research, accredited by the German Network Health Service Research (DNVF).
Since October 2022, Franziska Herbst has been spokesperson for the Humanities and Social Sciences Professions Section and since September 2023, she has been spokeperson for the Research Working Group of the German Association for Palliative Medicine.
