In December, the self-help group for brain tumor sufferers and their families was founded - a regional group of the Hirntumor Selbsthilfegruppe e.V. (Brain Tumor Self-Help Group), which provides financial support and personnel for the foundation. The establishment of the group in Hanover marks another milestone in the care and support of brain tumor patients.

The foundation was initiated by Lea Kauffmann, Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) nursing expert at the Clinical Department of Neurosurgery at MHH and Alia Schilling, a former relative. They received support from MHH Clinical Director Prof. Dr. Joachim K. Krauss and Senior Physician Dr. Manolis Polemikos from the Clinical Department of Neurosurgery.

"Every day, we see how those affected and their relatives face enormous challenges when they are diagnosed with a brain tumor. Discussion groups offer much-needed support and guidance," says Lea Kauffmann. She and her colleagues work daily in nursing care and oncological nursing advice in neurosurgery at the MHH and know the concerns of those affected. An initial meeting on 13.12.24 with 15 participants already showed how important such a space for exchange and support is.

In addition to personal exchanges, joint online presentations on current topics such as new treatment methods, TTF therapy and palliative care are also planned. The group aims to be a place where people can strengthen and inform each other and find ways through the illness together. The group is supported by a medical advisory board, which is coordinated by the two MHH physicians Prof. Krauss and Dr. Polemikos.
