As the central biobank of the MHH, the Hannover Unified Biobank (HUB) has set itself the goal of carrying out quality-assured sample collections. The HUB manages and stores different types of samples (e.g. plasma, serum and other body fluids, DNA, tissue, cells, cell lines, microorganisms, etc.). A supplementary collection of tissue samples from surgical specimens is kept at the Institute of Pathology. To provide comprehensive answers to research questions in cancer medicine, the cancer registry and the two biomaterial collections are linked so that comprehensive characterizations of the biomaterials can be made available for special research projects.

It is possible to apply for biomaterials for research projects. Preliminary inquiries regarding the availability of biomaterials for oncological patients can be made via the Cancer Registry at the Tumor Center of the MHH.

The HUB is certified according to DIN EN ISO 9001:2015 and has been positively evaluated by the Ethics Committee. This confirms the ethical and legal harmlessness of the HUB according to the evaluation basis for research-related biobanks of the Arbeitskreis medizinscher Ethikkommissionen (AKMEK). The biomaterials are processed in the HUB according to "Standard Operation Procedures" (SOPs) and with a high degree of automation.
