Our study team

Our study team at the Department of Ophthalmology at Hannover Medical School (MHH) conducts numerous clinical studies under the direction of Ms. Melanie Haar. In close cooperation with the Clinical Research Center Hannover (CRC), we are continuously working on the research and further development of new therapies and diagnostic procedures in ophthalmology. There are also interdisciplinary research collaborations with other specialist departments at the MHH. In addition to our assistant physicians and study nurses, Anke Beckmann (optometrist, M. Sc., study coordinator) and Dr. Irene Oluwatoba-Popoola (optometrist, OD, MPH, FAAO, study coordinator) are an integral part of our team. Our team looks after the patients throughout the course of the study and ensures that all examinations and treatments are carried out in accordance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP) regulations, the highest standard in clinical research.

We conduct studies on various ophthalmologic diseases, including

  • Dry (geographic atrophy/intermediate) and wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD)
  • Diabetic macular edema
  • Macular edema after central/ branch vein occlusion
  • High myopia in children
  • Cystinosis

Through our research, we want to contribute to the development of innovative diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and continuously improve the care of patients with eye diseases.
