Welcome to the Department of Ophthalmology at Hannover Medical School

The spectrum of the Department of Ophthalmology covers the areas of patient care, research and teaching.

Our patient care includes diagnostics, conservative and microsurgical treatment of eye diseases and ophthalmologic emergencies. In the polyclinic, we have around 23,000 patient contacts per year, carry out around 5,000 outpatient eye operations in two main operating theaters and one outpatient operating theater and currently treat around 3,900 inpatients in 36 beds.

Modern examination units and new diagnostic equipment allow us to make a good assessment of your eye diseases. In the therapeutic area, we use new technologies and small incision techniques in the anterior and posterior segments of the eye, which lead to less invasive treatment results and therefore to a high level of patient satisfaction. We specialize in the medical and surgical treatment of retinal and macular diseases, glaucoma, cataracts and corneal diseases. Here we offer you the latest techniques: Sutureless 23G/25G vitrectomy (vitreous excision), selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) and minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) for the treatment of glaucoma, in the area of the cornea not only perforating corneal transplantation but also transplantation of the inner corneal layer (DMEK), as well as crosslinking for keratoconus disease. Special techniques such as photodynamic therapy (PDT) and selective laser therapy of the retina (SRT) are also offered. Another clinical focus is the treatment of strabismus, diseases of the eye socket and rarer retinal degenerations. You can find more information about this on our website.

Clinical research at our Clinical Department focuses on ophthalmologic imaging, particularly of the fundus of the eye, which allows us to specifically monitor retinal therapies and reliably diagnose rare or unclear diseases. As each examination unit is equipped with a camera system, findings can be adequately documented, which is important for progress assessments and is a particular advantage for the training of our assistants and students. Equipped with these facilities, many retinal studies are also carried out at our Clinical Department. Information on the studies can be found here.

You are welcome to contact us if you have any questions or would like to make an appointment. We will deal with your concerns individually and personally and try to help you with your eye diseases in the best possible way.
Yours sincerely,

Prof. Dr. Dr. C. Framme, MBA
