The Palliative Medicine Consultation Service (PMK)

The multi-professional, palliative medical consultation service offers co-care and support for patients and their relatives during an inpatient stay on all wards and in all Departments at Hannover Medical School.

The team consists of specialists with additional qualifications in palliative medicine and nurses with special training in palliative care and special knowledge and experience in pain therapy, symptom control and holistic care.

Our team is supported by psychological psychotherapists and social service staff to ensure comprehensive psychosocial support.

Consultation requests can be made by the treatment team of the ward providing care. We contact the treatment team as well as the patients concerned and their relatives promptly after receiving the consultation. Individual treatment plans and goals are discussed and developed together with the treatment team on the ward. We are also available to answer questions from patients or their relatives themselves.

We are the point of contact...

... for patients with physical and mental
complaints caused by an advanced, incurable
disease.

Palliative care should not be started at the end of life, but is an important part of good medical care in advanced disease situations.

Advice can be given in parallel with tumor-specific treatment (e.g. chemotherapy/radiation) and contact should be made as early as possible in the course of the disease.

We support...

  • in dealing with an incurable and progressive disease
  • in alleviating stressful physical symptoms (e.g. pain, shortness of breath, nausea, anxiety)
  • in alleviating emotional, social and spiritual burdens
  • in dealing with one's own wishes in this special phase of life
  • in making decisions about individual therapy goals

We advise...

  • on the organization of further medical and nursing care in the outpatient or inpatient sector (e.g. home, hospice, care facility)
  • on the connection to special palliative care services
  • for nursing questions on supportive and complementary care measures
