For some diseases in children and adolescents, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is the only possible cure. In the KMT outpatient clinic, patients and their families are informed about this form of treatment and, if necessary, prepared for the transplant. Children and adolescents who are discharged from inpatient treatment after a transplant regularly come to the KMT outpatient clinic to receive competent care from the physicians they already know.
Range of services
A large proportion of the children we transplant are referred to us from outside the hospital. These children and their families are presented to us in our transplant outpatient clinic and prepared for the transplant. The search for a suitable donor is initiated from here.
Another important role of our KMT outpatient clinic is the follow-up care of our patients after their inpatient stay. Particularly in the first few weeks after transplantation, it is important to recognize possible complications at an early stage and treat them if necessary. We help to manage the medication required after transplantation and try to include your referring physicians in the care in close consultation.
Later on, you and your child will only need to visit us at longer intervals. At these so-called six-monthly and annual check-ups, we pay particular attention to any possible late effects of a transplant. For example, we check heart and lung function, pay attention to hormonal development and try to identify and treat mineralization disorders in the skeletal system.
