Special guided tour through a special exhibition

On April 1, 2022, around 40 members of the Gesellschaft der Freunde der MHH e.V. and MHH-Alumni e.V. enjoyed an exclusive guided tour of the exhibition "Epidemics - Curse of the Past, Threat of the Future" at the Roemer and Pelizaeus Museum in Hildesheim. Museum curator Oliver Gauert and Prof. Dr. Tobias Welte (MHH), who jointly designed the exhibition, guided the group through the wealth of exhibits and gave them a unique understanding of them.

Back in 2018, when coronavirus was not yet in sight and the worst epidemics of mankind seemed to be behind us, Egyptologist Oliver Gauert had the idea for an exhibition about the great epidemics through the ages. His research soon brought him together with Prof. Dr. Tobias Welte, Director of the Clinical Department of Pneumology at the MHH. The two immediately hit it off and from then on did everything they could to turn the idea into reality. On October 1, 2021, the time had come: the exhibition was opened.

On 1,800 square meters, over 800 exhibits are organized around a 30-chapter "book" on diseases and their cures, a man-sized model of which symbolically adorns the entrance area of the museum. Loans from major museums and collections have been skillfully and variedly arranged here to shed light on over 30 infectious diseases. Oliver Gauert told entertaining anecdotes about how it was not always easy to bring the exhibits to Hildesheim. But as charming and eloquent as the tall man was as he led us through the exhibition, nobody doubted his negotiating skills.

The members of the two MHH-affiliated Facilities or Institutions, some experienced medical professionals and some interested laypeople, were equally impressed on this late afternoon. Even after the three-hour tour, many still had the feeling that they "hadn't seen everything and absolutely had to come back". For the time being, however, the visitors bid farewell to the evening in good spirits and animated discussions - until next time.

The exhibition "Epidemics - Curse of the Past, Threat of the Future" can be seen at the Roemer and Pelizaeus Museum in Hildesheim until 17.07.2022. You can find more information on the exhibition website.
