Topic
The influence of health literacy on the professional socialization of young adults with chronic diseases
Health, professional participation and skills development cannot be considered separately in the context of biographical developments. Especially when an individual's health is impaired, it is important to critically reflect on this interdependence. As a trained educational scientist, Janine Michele's research project therefore aims to take an interdisciplinary approach to the interface between public health and vocational education.
About the project
According to the results of the KiGGS wave 2 study, a "good general state of health" is classified as a significant resource for successfully coping with the developmental tasks of childhood and adolescence. A reciprocal view also shows that a change in educational and social structures has a direct impact on the health of children and adolescents. This is particularly evident in young adults who grow up with chronic illnesses throughout their entire biography. Those affected are not only required to deal with their immediate physical and mental impairments, but also to take responsibility for shaping their everyday private, professional and social lives.
This is particularly reflected in school and professional contexts. In order to be able to cope with their own professional socialization as a developmental task, young people with chronic illnesses must not only acquire professional, social and human skills, but also learn to deal with their own health in a reflective manner. The ChEG scholarship will therefore investigate the influence of health literacy on the professional socialization of young adults.
To this end, the conditions for successful professional socialization for people with chronic illnesses will be determined.
Method
Biographical interviews are used to examine whether, how and at what points in the course of a person's professional biography an illness such as epilepsy or type I diabetes mellitus can influence their career and to what extent the health literacy of those affected is related to this. The evaluation is based on the documentary method. The reconstructive approach makes it possible to form types in order to distinguish specific patterns of dealing with chronic diseases in the context of occupational socialization processes.
On this basis, it will ultimately be deduced how health literacy is reflected in young adults with chronic illnesses and how the promotion of health literacy contributes to the successful development of occupational socialization and the strengthening of occupational participation in a type-specific manner.
