Topic of the doctorate

Organizational health literacy in German hospitals. Awareness and degree of implementation - an empirical study.

Background

The promotion of health literacy in Germany involves science, politics and practice and requires the integration of different actors in the process. In this context, the focus is placed on hospitals that promote health literacy. The Institute of Medicine's concept of Health Literate Health Care Organizations (Brach et al., 2012) describes organizational strategies for consolidating or further developing sufficient organizational health literacy.

Aim

To disseminate and promote the concept of organizational health literacy in German hospitals.

Method

A quantitative, nationwide hospital survey is conducted to examine the awareness and degree of implementation of the 10 characteristics of health literacy-promoting organizations. An in-depth survey of hospitals will examine organizational health literacy in the context of patient- and resource-oriented care.
