Diagnostics

The Institute of Medical Microbiology and Hospital Hygiene provides the entire range of microbiological infection diagnostics (bacteriology, virology, infection serology, molecular biology, mycology, parasitology) as well as microbiological diagnostics in the context of hospital hygiene.

All human pathogenic bacteria, fungi, viruses and parasites are detected as part of general diagnostics in a step-by-step program tailored to clinical data and test material using microscopic, culture-based and molecular methods. Serological methods are used in infection immunology for the indirect detection of pathogens.
In addition to the easily cultivated classical pathogens that are detected as part of general diagnostics (bacteriology, mycology), there are pathogens that can only be detected using targeted and special diagnostics (parasitology, mycobacteriology, TB diagnostics). For this, there are either special requirements for the test material or special techniques must be used.

The diagnostics department is headed by Dr. Stefan Ziesing (deputy head of the institute).

Diagnostics is divided into the following laboratory areas:

  • Bacteriology (Head: Dr. Stefan Ziesing)
  • Mycobacteriology (Head: Dr. Ludwig Sedlacek)
  • CF bacteriology (Head: Dr. Ludwig Sedlacek)
  • Mycology (Head: Dr. Ludwig Sedlacek)
  • Parasitology (Head: Prof. Dr. Dr. Ralf-Peter Vonberg)
  • Infection Serology (Head: Prof. Dr. Dr. Franz-Christoph Bange)
  • Molecular Biology (Medical Director: Dr. Ludwig Sedlacek/Bioinformatics, NGS: PD Dr. Marius Vital)
