NEURO-ONCOLOGICAL IMAGING
Modern MRI techniques allow us to examine changes in the brain even more precisely and to better understand diseases. Multiparametric MRI reveals tumor biology.
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides detailed images of the brain. With additional, specialized imaging techniques, we can not only visualize changes but also gain important information about their characteristics, blood flow, and metabolism.
Especially in the case of brain tumors, these techniques help us assess the disease more accurately and plan the best possible treatment.
Specialized techniques complement structural MRI and support treatment decisions.
Using state-of-the-art MRI technology and innovative advanced imaging techniques, we enable highly sophisticated diagnostics of the brain and the central nervous system—going far beyond conventional imaging.
Our specialized range of examinations includes:
-
MR Spectroscopy “Examining Metabolism”
We analyze specific metabolic products in the brain. This can help better distinguish between tumors and other tissue changes. Analysis of cerebral metabolism and metabolic changes. Metabolic patterns (e.g., Cho, NAA, lipid/lactate) for supplementary lesion characterization. -
MR Perfusion (DSC/DCE/ASL) “Visualizing Blood Flow”
We examine the extent of blood flow to specific areas of the brain. This provides important insights into the characteristics and activity of a tumor. Quantitative and qualitative assessment of cerebral blood flow and tumor vascularization. -
Delayed Contrast-Enhanced Imaging “Detecting Tissue Changes More Precisely”
By taking additional “delayed” images after contrast agent administration, we can better assess certain changes and gain further insights into their causes. Advanced contrast-enhanced imaging for the differentiated characterization of pathological tissue changes. -
Diffusion Imaging (DWI/DTI) “Visualizing Tissue Structure and Nerve Pathways”
These techniques reveal the finest changes in brain tissue and make important nerve connections visible. This is particularly helpful in planning neurosurgical procedures. -
Functional MRI (fMRI) “Localizing important brain functions”
We can identify which brain regions are responsible forfunctions such as speech or movement. This allows for better surgical planning and reduces potential risks. Visualization of functionally relevant brain areas for preoperative planning. Eloquent cortical areas, preoperative risk assessment, and longitudinal comparison.
Our areas of focus: brain tumor diagnostics, monitoring treatment progress, distinguishing between tumor recurrence and treatment effects, and complex neuroinflammatory and neurovascular diseases.
When are these procedures used?
Our specialized MRI examinations are particularly helpful in:
-
The early detection and more accurate assessment of brain tumors.
-
Planning and monitoring individualized treatments.
-
Monitoring treatment success.
-
Distinguishing between tumor regrowth and changes resulting from previous treatment.
-
The investigation of complex inflammatory diseases of the nervous system and vascular diseases of the brain.
We determine which additional MRI procedures are appropriate on a case-by-case basis, depending on your condition and the clinical question at hand.
State-of-the-art imaging. Neuroradiological expertise. Precise diagnostics for individualized treatment decisions.
CLINICAL VALUE-ADD
Combination rather than individual parameters: image morphology + functional data + interdisciplinary context.
Tumor growth or changes due to treatment?
Modern MRI techniques help us reliably monitor the success of brain tumor treatment.
Changes can occur in the brain following surgery, radiation therapy, or drug-based tumor therapy. An abnormal MRI scan does not always mean that the tumor is growing again. Sometimes these changes are caused by the treatment itself.
Using specialized MRI techniques, we can examine these changes more closely and distinguish between them more effectively.
Our Imaging Procedures
-
MRI after surgery: An early MRI scan shows how completely the tumor was removed and whether any tumor residue remains. The images serve as an important basis for subsequent follow-up examinations.
-
Blood flow measurement (MR perfusion): We examine the extent of blood flow to the affected brain tissue. This provides clues as to whether the changes are due to active tumor tissue or are the result of treatment.
-
Specialized Tissue and Metabolic Studies (DWI, MRS, ASL): These techniques provide additional information about the characteristics, metabolism, and blood flow of the tissue. They are particularly helpful when conventional MRI images do not allow for a clear assessment.
-
Extended contrast-enhanced examinations: By taking additional MRI images at different time points after contrast agent administration, we can assess certain tissue changes more accurately.
Why is this important?
Our goal is to detect tumor regrowth as early as possible while avoiding unnecessary treatments if the changes are merely a result of previous therapy.
Through regular follow-up examinations and close collaboration with the treating specialists, we support the safest and most individually tailored treatment decisions possible.
Precise imaging for greater certainty in assessing treatment success.
CLINICAL BENEFIT
In cases of suspected recurrence, the decision is based on a comprehensive assessment of the patient’s history, perfusion, the Clinical Department’s evaluation, and the tumor board’s review.
