Single center: Esophageal atresia

Oesophageal atresia is a congenital malformation with an incidence of around 1:3000. Depending on the complexity of the clinical picture, the treatment of oesophageal atresia requires a differentiated approach with anastomosis techniques through to oesophageal replacement procedures. Here, expertise is of decisive importance for the outcome. Treatment is also multidisciplinary with intensive medical treatment, multiple endoscopies and lifelong follow-up care. Due to the often complex problems and multimorbidity of the patients, centralization is aimed for.

The Center for Esophageal Atresia at the MHH focuses on the care and research of this clinical picture. The quality of surgical and conservative measures is to be ensured by the multidisciplinary approach. In the long-term course of the disease, symptoms often persist and quality of life is impaired, which is why a systematic aftercare program has been developed for the center.

In this context, a transition program with its own consultation hours is being offered jointly by paediatric surgeons, gastroenterologists and psychologists at the MHH for the first time in Germany. There has been close cooperation with the KEKS parents' association for several years, including joint research projects.
