Single center: Rare diseases of the auditory organs
Hearing loss is the most common sensory deficit in humans. Children in particular are also affected to a high degree. Even though newborn hearing screening enables us to detect hearing loss at an early stage, many hearing disorders that occur later and, above all, their causes remain largely undetected.
This is of great relevance, as hearing loss can have far-reaching negative consequences for cognitive development. In addition, sensorineural hearing loss can occur with other diseases - this then affects all generations. With genetic diagnostics, we have an increasingly important tool at our disposal to develop new therapeutic procedures in addition to diagnostics.
The ENT Clinical Department with the German Hearing Centre at the MHH is one of the world's largest clinics for the treatment of ear diseases and has in-depth experience. It deals with the entire spectrum of audiometry and neurootology as well as surgical and technical care with all types of hearing systems and hearing implants such as cochlear implants. At the same time, the ENT experts see numerous cases with rare diseases in which hearing loss is a symptom and therefore have access to and experience with the complex field of rare diseases. Surgical therapy is now being supplemented by initial approaches to inner ear therapy using medication.
We are part of the Cluster of Excellence "Hearing4All" in the "Auditory Valley" and the SFB-Transregio.
