The clinical focus of the Muscle Center is the care of patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and other motor neuron diseases such as spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), the consultation hours for post-polio syndrome patients and the care of patients with various inflammatory or hereditary muscle diseases and peripheral nerve disorders (e.g. muscular dystrophies, myositis, myasthenia gravis, chronic inflammatory or hereditary neuropathies). The Muscle Center, which is certified by the German Society for Muscle Diseases (DGM), also includes the Clinical Departments and Institutes of Neuropaediatrics, Cardiology, Pneumology, Immunology, Neuropathology, Neuroradiology and Human Genetics.
In addition to clinical assessment, extensive laboratory tests, genetic tests and modern imaging and neurophysiological procedures in departments with many years of experience with neuromuscular diseases are available for diagnosis. Muscle and nerve biopsies can also be taken and examined in the Department of Neuropathology and other specialist laboratories if necessary.
The neuromuscular consultation team is active in national and international networks for deciphering risk/progression-modifying factors and biomarkers and conducting clinical therapy studies.
