Doctoral opportunities
Doctoral programs of the HBRS
The Center for Infection Biology(ZIB) is a cross-university facility or Institutions and is supported by almost 50 working groups dedicated to infection medicine issues and located at the Hannover Medical School, the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover, the University of Hannover and the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (formerly the Society for Biotechnological Research, GBF) in Braunschweig. The PhD program "Infection Biology" is open to people who have successfully completed a university degree in medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine or natural sciences and is intended to provide project-oriented postgraduate training in research with the aim of enabling in-depth independent scientific work and an extended professional qualification for tasks in research or related activities in the field of infection biology.
The "Molecular Medicine" PhD study programmes are aimed at physicians with a doctorate and natural scientists with a Diplom or M. Sc. degree and prepares students for the step towards research-based science in a project-oriented manner. The English-language interdisciplinary program runs for three years. In addition to research work, the curriculum also includes key qualifications such as research and medical ethics, scientific writing and presentation. Students complete their studies with a PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) or Dr. rer. nat. degree.
The Cluster of Excellence REBIRTH (From Regenerative Biology to Reconstructive Therapy) has initiated the PhD study program "Regenerative Sciences". This study programme is also located under the umbrella of HBRS and is intended to enable a research career in the field of regenerative medicine and will benefit from the intensive collaborations within the REBIRTH Cluster of Excellence. The research topics include developmental biology, stem cell biology, aging and degeneration, inflammation, tumor biology, transplantation, biomaterials, cell therapy and tissue engineering.
The Center for Systems Neuroscience(ZSN), which is made up of working groups from the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover, Hannover Medical School, the University of Hannover and the Hannover University of Music and Drama, has established the PhD program " Systems Neuroscience". The PhD program provides project-oriented postgraduate training in neuroscientific research with the aim of enabling students to carry out in-depth, independent scientific work and gain advanced professional qualifications for tasks in research or related fields of activity.
Free doctorate at the MHH and beyond
Free doctorate at the MHHIn addition to the doctoral programs, a free doctorate at the MHH is also possible. You can find more information here.
Doctorate at the Faculty of Natural Sciences at Leibniz UniversityFast Track
For students with outstanding performance in the first three semesters, there is also a fast-track option in the Master's degree program in Biochemistry, which allows students to switch directly to one of the MHH's doctoral programs after the third semester and thus shorten the overall duration of their studies by half a year.
- The first three semesters of the four-semester Master's program are studied regularly.
- Students with an excellent module grade point average (threshold value is determined annually) can apply to the program director of the Master's degree program in Biochemistry to begin experimental work in one of the MHH's doctoral programs (PhD or Dr. rer. nat.) in the 4th semester after three semesters studied at the MHH (90 LP).
- Admission to this fast-track program must be approved by the program director of the Master's program in Biochemistry and requires a consultation and examination interview with the program director of Biochemistry, the respective program director of the graduate program in question and the intended supervisor of the experimental work.
- The phase of the doctoral project completed instead of the 4th semester of the Master's program is credited as part of the entire doctoral program.
- The fast-track student formally leaves the Biochemistry study programs at the end of the third semester and is enrolled as a doctoral student. However, they retain the option of submitting a Master's thesis that is clearly distinct from the doctoral thesis in terms of content by the end of the doctoral program at the latest, thus earning the M. Sc. degree.
- The PhD programs stipulate that fast-track biochemistry students receive a letter of acceptance to the desired PhD program at the end of February of each year (i.e. at the end of the third semester) after determining the module grade average, completing the consultation and examination interview and agreeing the experimental work with the supervisor. Likewise, the doctoral candidate's future funding must be arranged at this point. The Dr. rer. nat. doctoral program can be scheduled more freely.
